VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

I purchased this vehicle in August 2016 from the original owner, a retired aerospace engineer who bought it new and used it as his daily commuter from Thousand Oaks to Lancaster until he retired and moved to Cambria, where the car was garaged and little driven. The car has always been garaged and well-maintained. I have driven it about 8000 miles in the 6 1/2 years I have owned it, and now it's time to move on to finishing a 1976 2002 restoration. Beautiful car, runs strong and smooth, gets compliments and thumbs-up every time I take it out.

Mechanical: 205,000 highway miles on the 3.5 liter straight six. Compression still 175 across all cylinders, no leaks, smoke, or noises. Oil and filter always changed regularly using Mobil 1 full synthetic. Since I've owned the vehicle I've replaced the battery, alternator, in-line fuel pump and fuel filter and installed new Brembro drilled and slotted rotors w/new pads, front and rear. Hankook 225/50 tires with less than 2000 miles on 16" wheels from a later 5 series. Original metric wheels and aging Michelins included in sale.

Exterior: Original Cinnabar red paint shows a few minor nicks and dings, but still shines very well. No rust. Windshield has a small chip above rear-view mirror and shows pitting when driving directly into the sun but is not noticeable under normal driving conditions. I've repaired the front spoiler, which was cracked when I bought the car; not a perfect job, but a strong bond and a decent finish. Overall, a highly-presentable 10-footer that will draw accolades at local show-and-shine events.

Interior: Dove-gray interior shows little wear with no splits or separated seams. Three 1/4" tears on rear package shelf. Driver's seat has been reupholstered at some point. I've covered both front seats with high-quality sheepskins (removed now for photos but included in sale). Original dash has some cracks but no warping. I've installed a dash cap; looks much better but not perfect (slight bowing along rear edge of tray area on passenger side). Original radio still works, after some fiddling with the knob to eliminate crackling, but the aftermarket CD player does not (I think it's disconnected under the dash but haven't investigated). A/C blows cold in rear but weak from front vents. Should be serviced. Left rear quarter window does not work. On-board computer diagnostics won't scan. Overall very clean and highly presentable.

Defects: As noted abovel, windshield should be replaced at some point (not an immediate safety issue, IMO), sound system needs upgrade, left rear quarter window does not work. A/C needs to be serviced. I recently noticed a small drip from the fuel filler area when I top off. Not every time, and the leak stop pretty quickly. Paint shows minor nicks and dings from normal wear.

Summary: I drive the car locally on occasion and have taken it on several 4-hour road trips. It's a pleasure to drive, rides great, and always draws positive attention. A reliable, highly-presentable example of a classic marque. Nose bra (NIB) and car cover (used, excellent condition) included in sale, along with sheepskin seat covers and original metric wheels and Michelin tires. Must see to fully appreciate.
