The Mercedes-Benz 560SL of 1986-1987 may trace its ancestry back to 1954 and the World Championship 300 SLR sports-racing machines that swept all before it on a vehicle that saw it retire undefeated in 1955. The 300 SL and all SLs to follow had their genesis in this immortal ''Silver Arrow''.
One of 13,394 produced and not that many remaining, this 560SL in effect is three distinct 560SL's...open-air roadster, convertible coupe, and with fitting the steel hardtop, closed grand touring coupe providing the pleasures of a sporting machine with the benefits of a Mercedes-Benz. Built like a tank with the looks of a centerfold, Mercedes-Benz was hitting their stride with this late 1980's SL Coupe/Roadster.
Exterior – Smoke Silver original M-B paint covers this wonderfully straight steel paneled coupe/sportster, and little faults may be seen even when looking closely at the exterior. Ribbed side mounted signal lights and wrap around ribbed taillights are designed to be self-cleaning. A shiny grill surround with the large tri-pointed M-B Star leads the way, and a chromed bumper with black vinyl side coverings shows in front and rear. The like new chocolate brown German canvas convertible top is showing no wear and the rear window is clear. A hardtop in body matching Smoke Silver comes with this vehicle and is like new. All is in air/water-tight condition. Professionally refinished alloy wheels are noted on all four corners wrapped in brand new Micheline Defender 205/65R15 rubber.
Interior – Chocolate brown covered original leather upholstered bucket seats feel like a glove and rest within an environment of exotic burl walnut veneers, and all important very clean instrumentation. Included is a plethora of creature comforts like power windows, power mirrors, climate control, cruise control, and the factory Becker Grand Prix AM/FM/Cassette stereo. The ashtray, though, has been converted to a “Radar Warning Device” – who wants to smoke in this vehicle! A full-size steering wheel fronts a pristine dash with nary a hint of a crack and/or a bit of dust on the bezels or glass fronted gauges. Plush velvety chocolate brown carpets flood this two-seater’s floors, rear storage compartment, and trunk with the front carpet protected by chocolate brown Mercedes-Benz floor mats. All carpeting is in wonderful condition.
Drivetrain - The 5.6 Liter alloy, V8 engine incorporates electronic fuel injection and sits in an original condition engine bay. Overall, this engine is nicely preserved. The hydraulically actuated torque converter automatic 4-speed transmission sits behind the V8 and can be used in automatic mode or be shifted manually. On the back is a 2.47 axle.
Under Carriage - Seen is a slight patina on the chassis that draws its design from that racing heritage, the 4-wheel, anti-lock power disc brakes, beautifully maintained suspension and limited slip differential, one would expect nothing else from this vintage automobile. Independent coil spring suspension provides the handling and ride on all 4 corners.
Drive-Ability – An elegant driver with great handling, and power to call on when needed, the three versions are a real plus, allowing you to use this vehicle year-round. These older 560SL's are very hot right now, although a test drive will prove with the top down it will keep you nice and cool. Putting the soft top up is a breeze when faced with an errant rain shower. All functions functioning, all systems GO!
It's not very often one drives a vehicle and instantly falls in love with the quality of the ride, the envy of the sheer power, and the surrounding luxury. With 34 years, its maintenance has not been deferred and recent service records are available. With the look of things, it must have been garage kept for most of its life. Make some one’s Christmas very Merry!
P.S. - This vehicle comes with original: Brochure, Manual, M-B Tool Kit, First Aid Kit and Bra.
