Classic Car Overview
1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SEC $27,500
Very rare and original 1987 Mercedes Benz 560 SEC Straman convertible. In 1987 this 560 SEC was purchased for $90,000 from Jim Marino Imports, CA; for delivery in Germany. It was driven on the AutoBahn, and then shipped to Long Beach and delivered straight to Costa Mesa at Straman’s for their $30,000 conversion to a Cabriolet. The original owner feels that this was probably their second conversion, and he only knew of two others. For Example, see Gallery Aaldering Automobiles where the other Straman is listed in Europe for $47,950 Euros ($56,550 dollars). The original owner does not believe Gallery Aaldering’s statement that there were 116 produced.
Mercedes Benz did not make the 560SEC in a Convertible, the only offering being the tiny 560SL- which had zero room in the back seats. The back seat in this car will easily fit two adults.
R. Straman Co, was located in Costa Mesa California. Straman is a very well-known, and reputable coachbuilder. His company specialized in Mercedes Benz, Ferrari and Porsches. The frame was beefed up with what the Frame Inspector told me was a 2” steel bar running between the wheel wells, the trunk lid was changed so it opened up and out, the windshield frame was strengthened and the top of the windshield was chrome plated. The Steel top frame retracts electrically behind the seats, and the top mechanism was refreshed in 2005. While not silent at road speeds, this convertible was considerably quieter than my ’72 Eldorado manufacturer built convertible.
The body is in good condition but could use some bodywork and a paintjob. The underside is free of rust, with the Steel Beams used to strengthen the undercarriage visible. The interior is also in great condition, but shows some signs of age. The black carpet is in excellent condition with mats covering the carpets through the years. There is a seam issue in the passenger seat, but the springs and straps were refreshed also in 2005. In fact, the Original Black leather seats and the rest of the interior is in great shape. The black soft top is holding up well, but the liner needs to be replaced. This is a Classic Black on Black combination.
This speedometer says the car has only driven 52,000 miles; and I have found no reason to believe otherwise. I have spoken to 3 previous owners, and I have owned the car since January 2005 driving it less that 10,000 miles in those 12 years. I have garaged the car those years, and kept the car in a perfect working and driving condition. Work was Done at W.I. Simonson, Malibu Motors, and Martels.
The powerful 5.6 liter V8 with 300+ HP makes driving this car a very special experience. It is Equipped with all modern luxuries, like electric windows, electric soft-top, cruise control, electric adjustable and heated seats, ABS, Safety Restraint System, air-conditioning, power steering, airbag, Loringer Wheels and central door locking system. In short, a special and rare four-seater convertible in a great original condition!
The price reflects a lowball of what I think this vehicle is currently worth. But with new the paint, and a new liner, it would be worth so much more. I have records showing I have spent $15,000 making sure that this car will run great for you; and the wife says “no more!” If you want to prove what it is worth, again, go see Gallery Aaldering Listing. Adding the available AMG body conversions would potentially increase the value as well. I am only selling this car, because the wife wears contacts, and hates convertibles.

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.
