Classic Car Overview
For consignment, a 1987 Ford Mustang GT convertible showing 117,578 miles, but the true miles are unknown. This was the car to have in the late 80s, its distinctive cladding and tail light treatment made it stand out while it delivered impressive performance and top down enjoyment. More than 32,000 convertible GTs were produced in 87.
Exterior
One of the more popular and recognizable colors on the GT convertible is Oxford White and white alone wouldnt raise eyebrows, but Fords use of a red midline stripe, a smooth fascia, and color matched tail light cover created an exciting and unique exterior. Monochromatism was in during the 80s and no car represents that better than a white GT with white canvas top. The 15-inch Turbine wheels look understated by todays standards, but are reflective of the times, adding sport, and along with the coveted 5.0 emblem and stamped Mustang GT markings, were the stuff of boyhood dreams! Imperfections include some scuffs on the cladding ducts, rear valance, and front air dam, chin scrapes, and some paint cracking on the flexible body parts.
Interior
Striking two tone door panels mix white with red inserts and armrest with vinyl, textured plastic, and carpet alternating space. White leather covers the seats, including the rear, and the fronts show some use induced wear, especially the drivers side with some cracking and compression, but no rips were noted. Up front, its 80s simplicity with a two spoke steering wheel and simple instrument cluster behind plexiglass and a center stack with A/C knobs and refreshingly original AM/FM/Cassette radio. The T-shifter is standard Ford fare, all on hard plastic over red carpeting and Mustang branded mats. Gray cloth panels line the trunk and present cleanly.
Drivetrain
Some red paint is used to enhance the name plate and throttle body of the infamous 5.0 liter V8, rated at an 80s healthy 225 horsepower. Its tied to an AOD 4-speed automatic transmission routing power to the Ford 8.8 rear with 2.73 gears and TracLoc.
Undercarriage
Some typical oxidation underneath but overall a clean presentation. Factory headers lead to FlowMaster mufflers and terminate with angle cut end out back. Power brakes are supplied with disc in front and drum in back and suspension includes coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.
Drive-Ability
The trusty five liter starts up without hesitation via fuel injection and emits the slightly muscular exhaust tone GTs are known for. The car runs well, tracks straight, handles nicely and fulfills our retro high school desires! Meanwhile, we note the A/C and horn are not working, the passenger front window only works from that sides door, and the left rear window needs some help going up and down. All other functions on this rad ride work as intended! While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Whether its just nostalgia, or the desire to have a once common, now classic 80s Mustang, this white GT is worthy of your consideration. Fast, fun, and simply by todays standards, the Foxbody was a huge success; some even lament its end and now they are affordable classics that are show worthy.
