Rather than managing the development strictly in-house, Corvette Chief Engineer Dave McLellan authorized a legendary collaboration with Reeves Callaways engineering firm in Old Lyme, Connecticut. The result was Regular Production Option (RPO) B2K, marking the first and only time in Chevrolets history that a specialist manufacturer was entrusted with a factory-ordered, factory-warranted powertrain upgrade.Standard Corvettes were shipped directly from the Bowling Green assembly plant to Callaway Engineering. There, the 5.7-liter V8 engines were disassembled and remanufactured using stouter componentry. Callaway added a forged crankshaft, four-bolt main bearing caps, sturdier connecting rods, and low-compression Cosworth or Mahle pistons. Fed by twin Warner-Ishi or Rotomaster turbochargers and dual intercoolers, output jumped to a monumental 345 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torquepropelling the Corvette past contemporary supercars from Stuttgart and Maranello for a fraction of their cost.This particular B2K Twin Turbo is finished in an aggressive, period-correct Black. The 1987 models retained the beautifully clean, iconic wedge lines of the early C4 chassis.
