Classic Car Overview
The 1987 Acura Legend was a pivotal vehicle that helped launch Hondas luxury division, Acura, in North America. It broke new ground by introducing Hondas first-ever production V6 engine and offered upscale features designed to challenge European luxury manufacturers.
The 1987 model year featured two different engine displacements depending on whether you chose the 4-door sedan or the newly introduced 2-door coupe.
- Legend Sedan Engine: 2.5-liter, 24-valve SOHC V6 producing 151 horsepower and 154 lb-ft of torque.
- Legend Coupe Engine: 2.7-liter, 24-valve SOHC V6 producing 161 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque.
- Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive with equal-length half-shafts to eliminate torque steer.
- Transmissions: 5-speed manual or an electronically controlled 4-speed automatic with a selectable Sport mode.
- Suspension: Four-wheel independent suspension with front double-wishbones derived from Formula 1 development.
Alongside the smaller Integra, the Legend successfully established the Acura brand in 1986--1987. It proved that Japanese manufacturers could build reliable, high-tech executive cars, forcing German brands to rethink their entry-level strategies.
