The 1986.5 model year was unique because it was entirely naturally aspirated---the legendary factory Turbo version wasnt introduced until the 1987 model year.
- The Engine: It debuted the 3.0-liter DOHC 24-valve 7M-GE inline-six engine, a massive step up from the older 2.8-liter engines. It produced 200 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque for the US market.
- Race-Inspired Suspension: The Mark III introduced a sophisticated four-wheel double-wishbone suspension layout, giving it excellent high-speed stability and handling.
- TEMS (Toyota Electronic Modulated Suspension): This was standard or optional depending on the package, allowing drivers to electronically adjust the shock absorbers between Normal and Sport settings on the fly.
- The Sport Roof: A highly popular option was the removable Targa top, which could be unbolted and stored in the hatch for open-air driving.
