Classic Car Overview

1986 Panther Kallista Roadster The Panther Kallista was designed by Robert Jankel and was hand-assembled by Panther Westwinds in its factory on the grounds of the Brooklands race circuit in England. The Panther Car Company was a low volume hand-crafted builder of replicas of the 1930s vintage classic cars. The company was later sold and became the Panther West Winds Ltd. Company. Upon purchase, the companys mission changed as well. They now produced a wide range of automobiles over the years ranging from contemporary sedans to open two-seaters in similar fashion and allure as the pre-war sports cars. This Kallista, which was named after the Greek word meaning small and beautiful, was built beginning in 1983 and imported into the United States beginning in 1985 carrying a sticker price of $23,500. The Kallista proved to be a popular vehicle, but the pricing and hand-built nature of the car slowed production to just 1,695 examples, of which only 148 made it to the United States. Exterior Showing signal red original paint scheme, the exterior is dented with chipping on some surfaces and is in need of restoration. White belting starts at the front grille, and heads to the rear of the car ending at the mid door point. Some denting is seen on the outboard fenders, as well as the running boards. Chrome is pitted and has dark painted areas that are chipping. The plastic front grille is intact, however shows sun fading. Headlights and bullet fender mounted turn signals show in good condition. Some reflectors on the edges of the fenders are broken. The convertible top is in poor condition, with areas of rotting, and tears. The boot for the top appears in good condition. Exterior chrome window surround is rough, spoked wheels are in nice condition, but appear to be missing the Panther logo on the center hub, which is present on the spare. Interior Bucket seats do not appear to be in the original leather. They are in need of a reupholster as the interior foam has lost its resilience. All wood veneer on door panels and dash is cracked or totally gone, as well as glove box door is missing. Door panels are original and are covered in black vinyl with Panther logo in them. Crank mechanisms are very loose and seem stripped a bit. Carpeting is good, center console is worn, and steering wheel appears to be original. Gauges are analog and sit in the wood veneer dash. Drivetrain A 2.3liter I4 engine is topped by a 2-barrel carburetor. A 4-speed manual transmission, A-arm suspension in front, coil spring in the rear, with front disc and rear drum brakes complete the package. Underside view shows some oiling, and a test drive revealed that the transmission is stuck in first gear. Only 148 Panther Kallista models made it to the US shores. A hand-built car, whos styling is reminiscent of the Allard, Morgan or Lotus 7, this example is in need to some TLC. The structure is there, however some cosmetic, as well as mechanical issues will need to be addressed prior to the enjoyment of this car.
