West coast Grand Wagoneer. 84,000 original miles, extensive recent service including rebuilt engine, transmission, new A/C, 4-wheel disc brakes, aluminum heads, fuel injection, and more. Runs and drives extremely well, everything works, ready to go!In recent years, few vehicles have out-performed their peers more than the Jeep Grand Wagoneer. As Jeeps first volley into the luxury SUV wars, it was often compared to Range Rovers and Toyota Land Cruisers when it was new. Today it enjoys a strong following made up of enthusiasts who were there and a new generation of buyers who just dig its old-school 4x4 dirt cred. It remains one of the most successful blends of old-school American luxury with off-road capabilities ever created and thanks to modern technology, SUVs like this handsome Saddle Tan Grand Wagoneer remain as appealing as ever. Thanks to two rounds of rather extensive service work, this one remains in outstanding condition today. The paint is in such good condition that we have to believe it has been repainted-theres a deep shine and a surprising gloss that wasnt standard equipment at AMC in 1986. The woodgrained Dynoc panels are most definitely newer and in excellent shape, with original fiberglass trim around them thats holding up nicely. It certainly captures the woody look Jeep was aiming for when they built the Grand Wagoneer. Nice chrome trim adds an upscale feel, and it, too, is beautifully preserved with the bumpers, grille, and window surrounds showing extremely well. The only real demerits we can find are a few cracks in the lighter fiberglass wood surrounds, but nothing that warrants replacement. If you are looking for a Grand Wagoneer thats been loved, this is it.The tan leather and cloth interior is just beautiful, with minimal signs of use and no damage to any of the seating surfaces. Even the drivers seat shows none of the usual scuffing or cracks that are an inevitable part of regular usage-the seats are very, very nice. The leather-wrapped wheel is a bit discolored but not damaged or torn, and this seems to be a common malady among Grand Wagoneers. All the gauges are fully operational and the A/C system has been recently rebuilt so it works quite well. In fact, everything works except the cruise control, which was necessarily disabled when the fuel injection was installed (more on that in a moment). Theres also a Pioneer AM/FM/CD stereo system that sounds quite good thanks to new speakers and the control unit for the Holley Sniper EFI system sits neatly on the center console. Of course, everything was standard including power windows and locks, dual power bucket seats, a power rear window with defrost, and a tilt steering column, so getting comfortable in this 40-year-old SUV is as easy as your daily driver. And thanks to the fold-down rear seat and massive cargo bay, theres almost nothing this big SUV cant carry. The Grand Wagoneer was never known for its tire-shredding performance, with just 140 horsepower on tap from 360 cubic inches. But the name of the game was torque, and in that regard the 360 definitely delivered. But perhaps more importantly, this one has been recently rebuilt and includes upgrades like a set of Edelbrock aluminum cylinder heads, an upgraded camshaft, shorty headers, and the aforementioned Holly fuel injection system, all of which combine to make this one of the punchiest Grand Wagoneers weve ever driven. Aside from the shiny Edelbrock valve covers (necessary to clear the upgraded rockers underneath), it looks quite stock under the hood, including the snorkel and air cleaner assembly. Thanks to the wonders of fuel injection, it starts easily, idles properly, and pulls itself around with that muscular low-end torque that youd expect. The 3-speed automatic transmission was rebuilt at the same time as the engine, so it shifts cleanly and feeds power to a 2-speed transfer case that shifts on the fly and offers both high and low ranges. 2.73 gears in the axles mean that its an effortless highway cruiser that never seems to work very hard and all-new weather seals mean its shockingly quiet at speed. Decades of life on the west coast means that its extremely clean underneath with no rot, although it is not detailed for show. The rear axle was also rebuilt and now includes rear disc brakes, improving the big SUVs stopping power in a meaningful way and there are new shocks all around. Theres a fairly recent exhaust system (no catalytic converter, so check local regulations) thats muted but muscular and it sits on factory alloy wheels and 235/75/15 whitewall radials, as new.Extras include the original owners manual, advertising brochures, shop manuals, repair receipts, and a bunch of spare parts. If youve been paying attention, youve seen that prices on excellent examples are skyrocketing with no end in sight. These remain seriously popular trucks and when theyre done as well as this one is, you can enjoy it anywhere, anytime. Its still immensely capable, surprisingly comfortable, and a lot of fun to drive.
