Classic Car Overview

1986 Ford Mustang LX Convertible

For consignment, a 1986 Ford Mustang LX convertible showing 18,259 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. Lots of newer parts on this one, according to our consignor, including brakes, shocks, struts, heater core, tie rods, and spark plugs.

Exterior
Light Cadet Blue serves as a fantastic backdrop for the black features of the car which include the headlight bezels, broad side molding and bumper guards, and canvas soft top. Further enhancements to this car include 16-inch Pony wheels, an objectively more aggressive choice over the factory stock wheels, here wearing tires with an early 2022 date code. Theres also added dual exhaust which exit this car just as a 5-liter would with angle cut chrome tips split wide under the apron. Were not sure when luggage racks stopped appearing on common cars, but theres one on this 86 and it hovers over the third brake light. Imperfections include numerous scuffs, flex cracks, scratches, bubbles, paint chips, glue residue, surface rust, blistering and surface rust on door bottoms, and chin scrapes.

Interior
Simple door panels split a vinyl upper and carpeted lower, both in shades of blue with the carpeting showing some soiling. Electric window switches are on each as well as an electric door lock switch under the armrests. Two tone blue vinyl bucket seats occupy the front with a small bench for two in back, each with a deep grain pattern and in decent shape. Up front, the two spoke steering wheel leads to a grid patterned faceplate on the instrument cluster with basic units including a tachometer while an AM/FM/Cassette player resides in the center stack under vertical A/C levers. Textured black plastic surrounds the graphic indicator panel next to the digital clock, leading to the T-handle shifter and armrest, all showing light wear. Plush blue carpet covers the floor, gray flannel panels line the trunk, and we note some rust in the pinch weld of the decklid while were here.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is the mid range engine for the LX, a 3.8 liter V6 with the 80s era central fuel injection system and a horsepower rating of 120. Its mated to a C5 3-speed automatic transmission routing power to the Ford 7.5 rear axle.

Undercarriage
Lots of age showing here with surface rust and metal oxidation along with areas of flaking rust. The dual exhaust carries FlowMaster mufflers and terminates at chrome tips. Power brakes are split as front disc and rear drum while suspension includes coil springs at both ends with a 4 link in back.

Drive-Ability
Its giddyup time for this sporty 80s pony car and the V6 comes to life without hesitation and provides a decent soundtrack from the exhaust. The car tracks straight and handles well, and while you might not beat a five liter at a light, power is perfectly adequate for spirited, top down commutes. The speedometer reads higher than actual speed and bounces around a bit, but all other functions on this economy sports convertible operate as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The further we get from Foxbody production, the more desirable they seem to get. Maybe you had one as a high schooler, or dreamed of one while in elementary school, and now you can finally have the car of your dreams. Here we have a decent example of a disappearing breed, a relatively stock Foxbody from the mid 80s!
