Classic Car Overview
For consignment, a 1986 Dodge Shelby Charger with a title verified 37,421 actual miles. Of the 450,000 cars Dodge built in 1986, just 7,669 of them were Shelby Chargers. This is a two owner example with brand new paint that reflects light like a diamond.
Exterior
The two stage black and silver paint was applied in October, 2025 and gives this 40 year old a youthful shine. A broad silver stripe caps the horizontal surfaces of the car interrupted only by the clean louvers on the rear window that are both aesthetically enhancing and functional. Side stripes terminate with the Shelby name in its distinctive font and the hood is adorned with the word Turbo to differentiate it from normally aspirated versions. Of course, theres also a hood bulge and heat extracting vent on the hood which adds a bit of functional aggression along with a front air dam that connects with side cladding. The 15-inch wheels are unique and show a bit of patina that includes some deglazing and oxidation. Beyond that, paint and trim is excellent and as a new coat, shows no imperfections.
Interior
Typical 80s styling starts on the doors where shades of gray cover three different materials in linear layers that stack crushed velour, vinyl, and carpet. Things get interesting on the inside however, where Carroll Shelby branded cloth bucket seats proudly occupy the front and the rear bench is also graced with the embroidered CS, and its an iconic emblem that instantly increases the coolness of this Chrysler. It all shows a touch of age but is fully intact with the exception of a seam tear in the vinyl armrest. Horizontal spokes dress the sporty steering wheel ahead of a simple instrument cluster flanked by an A/C panel on the left and an AM/FM/Cassette radio on the right. The shifter rises from a hard plastic console in the middle, showing some age, but presenting a 5-speed manual over gray carpet. The rear cargo area under the hatch is also completely finished with clean, gray carpet.
Drivetrain
Under the hood is a clean, driver quality 2.2 liter SOHC turbocharged inline four cylinder putting out 146 horsepower, fuel injected, and mated to an A525 five speed manual transmission. Power is put to the pavement via the front tires and a 3.87 ratio.
Undercarriage
Clean underneath with some typical surface rust and oxidation but dry conditions are noted. A single exhaust runs through a Magnaflow muffler and exits via two chrome tips. Power brakes are supplied as front disc and rear drum and suspension is independent front and rear with Macpherson struts in the starring role.
Drive-Ability
Although not known for performance, the 2.2 is spry for its size and shifting is smooth while the interior provides the typical 80s experience with straight edges and hard plastics. This well preserved Shelby does everything well and all functions on board operate as intended. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.
Uncommon in their day and rare today, when was the last time you saw a Shelby Charger, and was it in this level of condition? The new paint on this car was done right and it shows. Heres a collectable Mopar that may not possess the performance of a muscle car, certainly has the mystique of Carroll Shelbys hand and input. This has cross sectional appeal to collectors and is bound to find a new home!
