VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

This 1986 BMW 535i was refurbished and modified during prior ownership. The exterior was refinished in Sepang Bronze Metallic, the interior was reupholstered in beige leather, and the 3.5-liter M30 inline-six was turbocharged. Additional modifications include M-Tech wheel arches, a Hartge front valance, a custom rear valance, a rear spoiler, E28 M5-sourced front seats, European-market headlights, European-market bumpers, 17” Fikse FM-5 alloy wheels, and an aftermarket Alpine CD stereo.

This E28 now shows 156k miles and is offered with $50k of refurbishment records under prior ownership, a car cover, a dash cover, coconut weave front floor mats, a tool kit, and a clean Ohio title in the seller’s name. The car was featured in Hemmings Sports & Exotic Magazine in 2016. During prior ownership, the exterior was refinished in Sepang Bronze Metallic from its factory black and installation of M-Tech wheel arches, BMP side skirts, a Hartge H5 front valance, and a custom rear valance. Additional equipment includes European-market chrome bumpers, European-market H1 and H4 headlights, a rubber trunk lid spoiler, a power sunroof, and E12-sourced chrome door handles.

Five-spoke 17” Fikse FM-5 alloy wheels are wrapped in 235/45 Continental ExtremeContact tires. Suspension modifications include SPAX springs, Bilstein Sport shocks, and front and rear E28 M5-sourced sway bars. The braking system features components sourced from an E32 7-Series and an E34 5-Series, and stainless-steel lines are fitted along with cross-drilled rotors at each corner. Front power-adjustable sport seats were sourced E28 M5, and the interior was refurbished with beige leather upholstery along with matching trim panels and a contrasting black replacement upper dashboard. The door panels and headliner were also retrimmed in black Alcantara, and the black carpets are protected by matching floor mats. Additional amenities include an aftermarket Alpine CD head unit with a subwoofer enclosure in the trunk, an onboard computer, European-market rear headrests, and a leather-wrapped M shift knob. The seller notes that the power windows operate slowly.

The leather-wrapped M-Tech 1 steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer and a 7k-rpm tachometer. Auxiliary Innovate Motorsports air/fuel ratio and boost pressure gauges are mounted in the center console. The six-digit odometer shows under 156k miles, approximately 3k of which were added by the seller.

The 3.5-liter M30 straight-six drives the rear wheels through a five-speed manual transmission. During the refurbishment, the cylinder heads and bottom end were serviced with new valves, seals, and timing components, and the water pump was replaced. A Stage 2 Turbo Charging Dynamics turbo charger and a custom intercooler were added, along with a MegaSquirt engine management system, a custom wiring harness, an MSD 6A ignition and coil, and a Walbro fuel pump. The seller notes that the thermostat was replaced in October 2019 and an oil change was performed in April 2020. The build is detailed in this thread on mye28.com, and a report from a dyno test performed under prior ownership is provided in the gallery and shows results of 293.68 horsepower and 325.39 lb-ft of torque.
