Classic Car Overview
This Vanagon has the desirable 2.1L engine upgrade, a 3" lift, BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires, and has received extensive mechanical upgrades and preventative maintenance. It starts, runs, and drives great with plenty of power for mountain roads, camping trips, and backcountry adventures.
Major work completed between 2022-2024 with approximately $20,000 invested in mechanical upgrades and reliability improvements:
2.1 cooling system conversion
- Stainless steel coolant pipe upgrade
- New water pump, radiator, thermostat, hoses, and aluminum coolant reservoir
- Fuel tank resealed with new vent system components
- New fuel lines and fuel filter
- California-legal exhaust system
- Complete front suspension rebuild including ball joints, bushings, tie rods, shocks, and steering components
- New front and rear springs
- New heater core and blower motor
- Fuse box and instrument panel upgrades
- Shift linkage improvements
Additional GoWesty upgrades include:
3" lift kit
BFGoodrich All-Terrain tires
Heavy duty truck mirrors (pair, upgraded from factory)
Full GoWesty exterior LED upgrade kit including LED headlights, reverse lights, and turn signal lighting (~$758 invested)
GoWesty Vanagon shifter storage console, brown/manual (~$374 new)
Various trim, weatherproofing, and camper improvements
Also included is an ARB Aluminum Case Awning with full GoWesty Vanagon mounting bracket kit and hardware, purchased new from GoWesty in October 2025 for $822. The awning is included with the van but has not been installed.
This van is a beast on back mountain roads. With the engine and weight over the rear wheels, it has excellent traction and plenty of confidence on dirt roads, forest roads, beach access roads, and off-the-grid adventures. The 2. 1 engine provides plenty of pick-me-up compared to the original setup, and the lift and BFGs give it a great stance and capability without sacrificing highway comfort.
The Westfalia camper interior makes it the perfect surf trip rig, weekend camper, hunting camp, or road trip vehicle.
