Classic Car Overview
Up for sale is my 1984 AMC Jeep CJ-7. I'm the second owner of this vehicle, having purchased it in 1989 with around 60K miles. Originally powered by the 2.5L 4-cylinder Iron Duke (Pontiac) engine with a light-duty 4-speed manual, at 66K miles I swapped the drivetrain out for a Chevrolet 4.3L TPI EFI Vortec V6 motor (3/4ths of a Chevrolet small block 350 motor, the 'mini L98' engine) and NV 4500 5-speed manual HD transmission with a granny low 1st and OD 5th, keeping (and rebuilding) the original Dana 300 gear-driven transfer case. All this was overkill for a vehicle that has been mostly road-drive, with a few trips down forest roads... no hard-core off-roading and no damage from it. The vehicle has around 27K miles with the new drivetrain and runs and drives well.
It's not perfect... it needs new tires (because of age, not wear), the brake lines flushed, and a new lens cover for the hard top's interior light. It was re-painted in the original factory color when I swapped the engine, including having the engine compartment cleaned, prepped, and painted black. The inside had the factory carpet removed and was Rhino-coated, and that is in great shape. The aftermarket steering wheel horn switch needs to be adjusted so the 'ooo-ga' horn works. It has working fuel and temp gauges but they were done quickly... if I keep it I'd replace the fuel and temp gauges in the speedometer cluster. And, it has a brand-new rear folding seat and steel locking center console with cup holders, both in the factory boxes, that I've never gotten around to installing. But, it's in fantastic shape compared to the overpriced and beat up CJs out there.
Why am I selling it? Honestly, I have too many cars and other motorsports vehicles, and just don't have the time. Please take it off my hands before I change my mind!
