1988-1992 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE: The Original Factory Racer

With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.

The story of the ZL1 Camaro, fitted with that rarest of the rare, all-aluminum 427 big-block V-8, is one that has often been told: How only 69 were made, how they exploited the GM option-ordering system, and how they've become the Camaro guy's ultimate Camaro.

Classic Car Overview

1984 Chevrolet Camaro Z-28 This was GMs years when they were really smiling, because these were the years of the Z-28 smoking the Mustang in the 1/4 mile. The 5.0 liter V-8 HO (High Output) was the engine to have for a mid 1980s Muscle car and the Camaro was the car to have. This car to have presents in very good condition. Garage kept, the T top and finish are good presenters, and will not let you down with a second gaze. Automatic transmission, and power options such as seating, windows, climate control, power steering, allow you to float it through the curves on a superhighway, or punch it and slide it through the track. Its that kind of car. Exterior In the world of 80s style the Camaro was surprisingly restrained, and the result is a timeless design that still influences Chevrolets newest sports cars. Theres just chiseled sheetmetal that manifests as a classic, instantly recognizable shape. This smoky gray to almost black with silver striped rockers is free from cheesy side cladding, or fake ground effects cowlings, and is pure and simple design. At the front of the car, a minuscule Camaro emblem is all that says youve arrived. Behind that emblem, a sunken spoiler hood leads the eye to blue green glass, which is woven between body-matched mirrors. A tasteful angled spoiler tops a bumper with the same striping and silver, but with a Z-28 5.0 graphic that gives those you are racing something to look at while you pull away. A smoky T top glass is in scratch free condition covers the compartment. Interior Lear Siegler designed seats are sand with black and grey striped fabric that envelope two front buckets and a rear 2+2 bench. Square and the derivations thereof adorn the dash area, with everything fitting neatly into the non-curved space. A center console houses the automatic shifter, and a glove compartment/armrest. Good condition gold carpeting floods the floors. Power seating, and windows is seen on the seats and door panels, also reminiscent of the Siegler design. Lets just say the interior is mid 80s dy-no-mite! Drivetrain Under the hood, a 5.0 liter 4-barrel carburetor, and 4-speed automatic transmission sits in an engine bay that says used but maintained. Not pristine, but certainly not neglected, this mill provides just enough grunt to keep this sinister smoky black Chevy both fierce and fun. Twist the key and the familiar sound of a modern big block rumbles through the dual exhaust system. A good example of the best year for the Chevy Camaro, 1984. Where power meets convenience, and top it off (or on) with a smoked T top. Lear Siegler Seats are retro but contemporary, and overall we have a classic in great condition, ready to be driven hard or soft.
