Classic Car Overview

The Land Cruiser emerged from Toyota’s bid to build a small all-terrain utility vehicle for U.S. forces in Japan in the early 1950s. While that goal didn’t pan out, the production vehicle helped establish the brand’s reputation for durability in the 1950s and joined the Jeep CJ and Land Rover in the all-terrain icon club. The 40-Series Land Cruiser, better known as the FJ40, replaced the 20-Series in 1960, coming to the U.S. in 1963. Long favored by off-roading enthusiasts, FJ40s have become desired collector cars in recent years.

This 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 was imported to the U.S. from Venezuela in September 2020. The seller, a vintage car dealer, reports that the Land Cruiser underwent a two-year restoration in South America that included a repaint, reupholstered seats and trim, a replacement soft top and a refresh of the suspension, brakes, exhaust and electrical system. Aftermarket air conditioning makes this Land Cruiser ready for summer cruises. The six-digit odometer shows approximately 92,000 kilometers (about 57,000 miles).

All FJ40 Land Cruisers were powered by a tough-as-nails overhead-valve 4.2-liter inline-six engine that sent power to the wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. In the ’83 model, the engine was factory-rated at 135 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. The part-time four-wheel drive system uses a dual-range transfer case and locking front hubs.

The engine was refreshed in Venezuela with a replacement carburetor and water pump, and that the exhaust system was also replaced. Since arriving in the US last year, this brightly painted FJ40 is said to have been further serviced with a new distributor, cleaned spark plugs and timing adjustment. The Cruiser is proven to cold-start easily and idle smoothly, with no smoke reported. Likewise, no leaks or weeps are indicated. Other work completed after the Land Cruiser’s US landing is said to include a new clutch and resurfaced flywheel done by the Transmission Doctor of North Fort Lauderdale in November 2020. The job included a new transfer case seal and AVM manually-locking front hubs. The transmission is said to shift smoothly.

The truck was purchased and transported to New Jersey.  Since being in NJ, the truck was brought in to HackensackAuto Spring and Wheel Alignment for a full service.  They did a front alignment, added an e-brake shoe with hardware and cable, adjusted the drag link, tightened the right outer tie rod, added front brake shoes and 4 wheel cylinder with hardware, added 2 rear wheel cylinders, a brake line was made up and rebuilt, and 2 driveshafts were made up. The restoration’s most visible result is the repaint in bright yellow. Details include a white grille surround, silver-painted bumpers and mirrors, and a replacement tan canvas soft top with roll-up sides. The photos show a like-new finish overall, and the seller reports there are no blemishes of any kind. The bumpers are not the same as on U.S. models. The seller indicates no rust, and photos support this. All lighting is reported to work properly.

Photos shown without the rubber floor mats reveal solid sheet metal throughout, with non-upholstered surfaces painted yellow and appearing to be impeccably finished. The seller reports that the restoration include reupholstered brown vinyl bucket seats with matching headrests, door panels, center console and sun visors. The instrument cluster features a 160-kph speedometer along with gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, battery amperage and of course fuel.

The rear cargo area is equipped with the FJ40’s hallmark fold-down inward-facing brown vinyl seats along with a black vinyl floor mat. The seller reports that all glass is scratch-free, and that window seals work properly. An aftermarket under-dash air-conditioning system uses R134a refrigerant, and the seller reports the system is in working order. There is, however, no heater, unsurprising for a model originally sold in a tropical country. An aftermarket audio head unit includes Bluetooth connectivity.

The FJ40 chassis, elegant in its functional simplicity, received a comprehensive refresh in the restoration process, with the seller indicating new bushings and shocks and servicing of the drum brakes that included a new left front brake cylinder. The seller reports no play in the unassisted steering. The 15-inch steel wheels with polished hubcaps are described in excellent condition, and the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro all-terrain tires are said to be new. A spare is fitted on the swing-out rear carrier.

This restored 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40, with just a few concessions to modern comfort, looks ready to deliver its unvarnished all-terrain driving capability. And with its bright yellow finish, it should be easy to spot from the air should you venture too far into the wilderness.

I recently purchased my dream truck and needed to make room in the garage.  I am not happy about letting this truck go, but I am excited for it to find a driver who has the time to show it the love it deserves!
