Classic Car Overview

1983 Mercedes-Benz 240D Sedan

For consignment, a 1983 Mercedes-Benz 240D sedan showing 66,736 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. This beauty presents in stock configuration and our consignor states the exhaust system and rear shock absorbers have been replaced.

Exterior
Like a fine Merlot, this 43 year old car has aged gracefully in its Orient Red exterior, still with very few flaws, and accentuated by the amber turn signals. yellow fog lights and a two color pinstripe that rides the shoulder in style. Theres plenty of polished metal on board a well including the iconic front grille with three pointed star topper, the robust bumpers front and rear, and tasteful trim around every window. Theres also side molding, rocker trim, and side mirrors that take on the mirror-like finish also found on the base of each door handle for an added touch of class. The 14-inch Bundt wheels are in great shape while imperfections on the body include some chips, scratches, and scuffs, and a nick in the rubber bumper.

Interior
The interior has held up nicely for the age and presents in the desirable Palomino colored MB Tex, beginning on each of the four door panels where it remains clean and fully intact. The grain and perforated pattern of the front buckets and rear bench show minor wear and no rips of any kind, a testament to the build quality classic Benzs are known for, and this certainly persists on the steering wheel and dash in front of us. Black and textured, the steering wheel provides the perfect grip, and the instrument cluster is clear and legible. Wood fillers decorate the mid panel and center stack and before you can decide whether its striped maple, zebra wood, or mahogany, your eyes are on to the sporty dials that control the A/C over the original AM/FM radio. The shifter is also based in the elegant striped wood while grained MB Tex covers the armrest and plush, tan carpet covers the floor with mats of equal quality. The headliner is clean and so is the trunk.

Drivetrain
Under the hood is a clean appearing 2.4 liter SOHC I4 diesel engine rated at 71 horsepower and fuel injected. Its backed by a 3 speed automatic transmission that routes power to the rear axle with 3.69 gears. In a 1983 Motorweek TV review, the car achieved 34 mpg on the highway, but were not making any claims here.

Undercarriage
We find clean conditions underneath where power disc brakes are distributed to each of the four wheels and that newer single exhaust carries a stock style muffler on its way to a rear exit. Front and rear suspension is independent and consists of coil springs at both ends.

Drive-Ability
Theyre built like tanks and drive like a fortified magic carpet, and this car exemplifies that without issue. Its not astoundingly fast, but its comfortable, rattle free, and robustly built. Not only does the car track straight on its 20 year old tires, but all functions within it work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

While it was once touted as Mercedes lowest price vehicle, it has all the allure of the luxury brand, and a stunning example of what high level car manufacturing is all about. Ask anyone who owns a classic Benz and youll typically get the same, positive review. This one checks all the boxes and awaits your ownership.
