Founded in 1916, BMW established its reputation by building automobiles that blended engineering precision, sporting performance, and everyday refinement. Through the 1960s and 1970s, the companys Neue Klasse sedans and elegant coupes helped define the modern sports sedan, laying the foundation for BMWs enduring reputation as the Ultimate Driving Machine. During this period, a young German company named Alpina, founded by Burkard Bovensiepen in 1965, began transforming BMW models into faster, more refined grand touring machines. Recognized for its meticulous engineering rather than aftermarket modifications, Alpina developed its own engines, suspension systems, interiors, and distinctive styling while maintaining a close working relationship with BMW. Today, authentic Alpina automobiles are highly prized by collectors due to their limited production, documented provenance, and unique character. Many were built in remarkably small numbers, and surviving examples with verified factory documentation are increasingly difficult to locate, making genuine BMW Alpinas among the more desirable and exclusive performance automobiles of their era.
Among the most coveted and sought-after BMWs of the era is this limited production, authentic 1982 BMW Alpina C1 2.3-litre coupe. Supported by a large dossier of factory documents, this example was delivered to Alpina in Buchloe by the BMW plant via Ruhnwaldt Trucking on September 29, 1980, for conversion. Alpina would issue the conversion on October 17, 1980. While under their care, this example underwent a complete transformation, both cosmetically and mechanically. Alpina front and rear spoilers were added, 15-inch Alpina wheels were mounted, the iconic body was finished in Cypress Green Metallic and topped with Alpina graphics. Mechanically, a Alpina C1 2.3-litre inline-six engine was installed, and progressive springs, and double ventilated perforated disc brakes were added. Additional equipment includes a five-speed manual gearbox, Alpina Blue and green striped upholstery and Recaro seats, a sunroof, Alpina four-spoke steering wheel, Alpina-branded VDO instrumentation, a BMW Bavaria stereo, and an Alpina plaque affixed to the dashboard that identifies this car as #117.
Under the care of just one owner in Mnster, Germany until 2022, it underwent a respray in its correct and original color of Cypress Green Metallic with correct Alpina graphics applied. This C1 was then imported into the United States in October of 2022 by its second owner from new. Subsequent service reportedly included changing the fluids and replacing the belts, filters, exhaust system, and coolant reservoir. Later, mechanical work included the spark plugs, fuel lines, fuel pump, and tie rods.
Accompanying this rare Alpina is a large dossier of documentation, which includes Alpina records, correct markings throughout the car, owners manuals in folios, a clean CARFAX report, service records, a bespoke spare key, jack, tool kit, and spare tire.
Today, this Alpina C1 offers its next owner the rare opportunity to experience Alpinas legendary engineering firsthand while joining an exclusive fraternity of enthusiasts fortunate enough to own one of the few authentic Alpina C1s produced.
