Classic Car Overview
The 1981 Trekker was a concept truck approved by Toyota and accomplished in a collaboration with the Japanese automaker and American recreation vehicle manufacturer Winnebago. Based on the Toyota Hilux 4x4 RV cab and chassis, the Trekker was outfitted with a fiberglass canopy and extra seating to appeal to the growing SUV market. The combination was quite a success with all 1,500 of the units sold and was a pre-cursor to the wildly successful Toyota 4Runner that was introduced in 1984. This Trekker is powered by the dependable 22R SOHC 4-cylinder engine producing a reliable 97 horsepower. On the exterior are factory chrome wheels, SR-5 striping and the removable fiberglass canopy top. The cabin is finished in Toyota’s upscale SR-5 trim with a vinyl interior that is in exceptional condition. Included are many driver and passenger comforts like power steering, power brakes, air conditioning, SR-5 gauges, AM/FM stereo, intermittent wipers as well as tinted glass. These mid-80s’ Toyotas were terrific vehicles of great quality and unheard of reliability, and this particular example is in excellent condition and ready to be enjoyed.
