VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. Classic Car Overview

This car is actually a 1985 280CE, but Autotrader doesn’t give me that option because this car was not available in North America in 1985. It is a gray market import. In 1985, the W123 coupe was only available in the 300CD. If you wanted a little more giddy-up with an M110 gas engine, you had to get it directly from Germany. You’ll notice that much of the instrument panel is in German.  Making it even more rare, it has a factory 5-speed manual transmission. This car is a survivor. My father was the first owner; I am the third. I got to drive it on special occasions in high school; it’s been my daughter’s high school daily driver.

The rear windows no longer function but the front power windows along with the power sunroof work fine. The mileage is a question mark. When I got the car in 2014, the odometer was frozen at about 105k. My Mercedes mechanic replaced the speedometer with a salvage part and dialed the odometer to about 109k and it has been functioning since.

This car loves to go down the road. If you want a car that’s completely maintenance-free, you should probably get a Camry. But my mechanic tells me that this car will be on the road for many years to come.
