Classic Car Overview
1980 Porsche 924 Turbo For consignment, a 1980 Porsche 924 Turbo with a title verified 86,938 actual miles, a two owner car and our consignor is not only a PCA and Rennlist member, but oversaw a long list of mechanical improvements over the past four years that includes the timing belt, brake components, fuel pump, radiator as well as a number of rebuilt components such as the CV joints, injectors, and warm up regulator. Thats just the tip of this turbos iceberg. Exterior With the exception of the front valance, according to our consignor, the paint is original, here presenting as a greenish Inari Silver over a darker Onyx green and the two tone profile is unique, and uniquely Porsche. Four ducts on top of the nose and something called a NACA duct tops the hood. This piece of nifty intake keeps the engine cool and was developed by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics. The large, curved window cascades to a rear rubber spoiler at the end of the hatch, which throws shade on the mostly flush rear fascia with space between the tail lights for a license plate, be it European or American. Period font spells out Porsche wide on the tail and 924 turbo on the lip of the hatch, while a large single exhaust tip peaks out under the rubber bumpers. 15-inch mesh wheels carry newer Yokohama 215/60R15 tires. Imperfections include a number of touched up scratches and chips, untreated scratches, and scuffs on the bumper. Interior The two tone theme continues, this time in brown and tan on the door panels which are smooth and clean and basic 80s. Turbo is on the door sill as we set our focus to the tan buckets seats in newer leather upholstery looking almost new with rib stitching and tan piping. Theres the suggestion of 2+2 seating in the back but like many Porsches, its virtually useless for passengers. A brown leather wrapped steering wheel has horizontal spokes and leads to a triple gauge package that features sporty green numbers on a black background under red needles with 55 mph delineated in red because that was the designated max highway speed back then, (just ask Hagar if you dont believe us). Brown abounds on the rest of the dash except for the center stack in black, with more gauges, climate level and Blaupunkt AM/FM/CD radio, leading to the center console with Porsches simple shifter design in a brown leather boot. Newer tan molded carpet with brown edge binding looks fantastic and covers the footwell walls while the tiltable and removable sunroof takes up most of the ceiling, also in clean condition. The cargo area is smoothly carpeted and clean. Drivetrain From the hood liner down, the engine bay is clean with only hints of being used. This is a 2.0 liter SOHC turbocharged inline 4 cylinder, fuel injected with a Bosch K-jetronic system and rated at 143 horsepower. It spots new drive belts, rollers and timing belts and new shift linkage front to back on the Getrag 5-speed manual transmission which has been resealed and has a new clutch master and slave. The cap, rotors and plugs have been replaced and new vacuum hoses included on the intake. A new A/C condenser dryer features new o-rings and an R134 conversion. Power brakes now have a new master cylinder, hoses and rear drum brakes. The battery, starter, and alternator are also newer. Undercarriage Clean underneath with some typical surface rust. The rebuilt CV joints stand out clean while the ANSA exhaust travels through the center tunnel encountering a stock style muffler before exiting via a chrome tip. Our consignor notes the fuel tank was removed, hot tanked, and sealed and sends fuel to rebuilt injectors via a new pump, hoses, and accumulator. Both front and rear suspension are independent. Drive-Ability With this much attention to detail, we didnt expect any hiccups and indeed, the tiny turbo did not disappoint. Weight distribution is 49/51 front rear and provides crisp handling as the blown four banger delivers good acceleration. Porsche cabins are renowned fun boxes and the 924 affords great visibility. Finally, all functions operate as intended and its time to bring the boost back to the bay. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase. Only 13,616 Porsche 924 turbos were made between 1979 and 1984 and therefore represent a fairly uncommon breed. Porsche embedded parts from both the 911 and the 928 of the time and created a racy little sports car that may be among the unloved in the Porsche pecking order but have seen a resurgence in recent years. Heres a well sorted example that sets the bar.
