The Volkswagen Beetle is one of the most recognizable and enduring automobiles in automotive history. By 1979, the Beetle had been in production for several decades and had developed a loyal following thanks to its distinctive styling, simple mechanical design, and air-cooled rear-mounted engine. The Super Beetle was introduced in 1971 and featured a revised front suspension that provided additional trunk space and improved handling compared to the standard Beetle. The 1600cc flat-four engine and four-speed manual transmission continued the Beetles familiar combination of straightforward engineering and engaging driving characteristics. Convertible versions, like this example, added an open-air driving experience while retaining the classic Beetle design that had become an automotive icon around the world.
