Windy City Warriors

From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Classic Car Overview

In late 1965 Fox Television contacted Dean Jeffries a famed Hollywood car builder to design and build a Batmobile for their upcoming Batman TV series. When the studio wanted the program to air sooner then he could produce the car, he was paid off and the project went to George Barris. The Batmobile that became the iconic car used in the TV show and early films was built on a one-off 1955 Lincoln Futura Concept car created by Ford Motor Company. Barris was trying to get Hollywoods attention with the Futura, which he had purchased from Ford for the nominal sum of $1.00 and other valuable consideration. Barris decided rather than building a car from scratch, it would be relatively easy to transform the distinctive Futura into the famous crime-fighting vehicle. Design work was conducted by Herb Grasse, working as an associate designer for Barris. When filming for the series began, several problems arose due to the cars age: it overheated, the battery died, and the expensive Mickey Thompson tires repeatedly failed. By mid season, the engine and transmission were replaced with those of a Ford Galaxie. This particular replica was built atop a 1979 Lincoln Continental chassis with the same styling and features as the original Barris Batmobile, such as the working lights , displays , and spinning retractable mast.
