Classic Car Overview

All vehicle trades considered including classics and performance. We can assist with financing and shipping as needed.

1979 was a big year for the Ford Mustang. It introduced the Fox Body platform which rekindled the breed and enjoyed a very successful 14-year run. But 1979 also brought a Mustang pace car back to the Indy 500 which was commemorated with the special Pace Car edition. While any such car is a collectible Mustang, this example is one of the best with only 2,100 miles! It has the desirable 5.0L V8 and 4-speed manual transmission along with lots of great documentation including the original window sticker, build sheets, warranty card, and more.

This Mustang was purchased new by a father and son on 10-31-79 from North Brothers Ford in Westland, MI. It obviously saw very limited use which is reflected in the cars condition almost 50 years later. All Pace Cars share the same pewter and black paint scheme with orange and red graphics and a removeable flip-up sunroof with storage bag. Other special features included the hood, rear spoiler, and front fascia with Marchal fog lights and covers. This model also received forged aluminum metric wheels with Michelin TRX tires measuring 190/65HR390 (replaced in 1998).

This car has the 5.0L V8 which saw lower production numbers than the 4-cylinder turbo that received most of the attention that year (despite making a little less power and a lot less torque). It runs great thanks to a recent tune-up and remains all stock including the smog pump and catalytic converter. Note the exhaust stickers are still intact and legible! Following the engine is a 4-speed manual transmission, making this the best performing Pace Car drivetrain you could buy. All engine and transmission markings remain in place and match the build sheet. Other standard features include power steering and power front disc brakes.

The interior is also unique to the Pace Car and in excellent condition. Everything is factory original except for the floor mats. You certainly cant miss the Recaro bucket seats with black and white inserts along with the matching rear bench seat. The instrument cluster is clean and simple with an attractive engine turned overlay and a classic 3-spoke steering wheel. There is also an Indianapolis Speedway emblem on the passenger side. The sound system uses and AM/FM/cassette radio and an optional rear window defroster is present.

This Mustang is in excellent condition with very low miles, but it is made even more collectible by its documentation. It comes with the original window sticker and two build sheets. There is the original warranty card along with the accompanying letter and envelope it was sent in. The owners manual and supporting literature is present along with a copy of the original title from 1979. Other nice items include old advertisements, an accessory catalog, and a service guide. And check out the two black satin jackets!

This really is an exceptional Pace Car. It is one of the best examples on the market with its great combination of condition, miles, equipment, and documentation. Be sure to see all the pictures in the gallery and let us know if you need any others. Pace Car or otherwise, you just don't see many Fox Bodies like this one.
