1979 Ford LTD For Sale This 1979 Ford LTD is a two-door Landau showing 12,431 miles, with a title reading actual mileage. The quad headlamps and vinyl roof mark it as the Landau, the top of the LTD range for 1979 and a one-year-only name on this body, as the Landau became the LTD Crown Victoria for 1980. Finished in light blue over a blue interior, it comes from the first model year of Fords downsized full-size platform and has been maintained accordingly. Power comes from the 5.0L V8, the 302 two-barrel that served as the LTDs standard engine for 1979, backed by a three-speed automatic. Fords four-speed overdrive automatic did not arrive until the following year, so the tall 2.75 rear gear does the highway work and keeps engine speed low at cruise. The combination was never built around acceleration and does not pretend to be. It was engineered for quiet, low-effort distance driving, which is what these cars do well. The original set of wheels come with the car. Braking is by front disc and rear drum to factory specification, with the Panther chassis layout of an independent front suspension and a coil-sprung live rear axle underneath. Inside, the car retains its blue interior and bench seat, the configuration the majority of these cars left the factory with and the one that almost never survives. The vinyl roof and quad-headlamp front end give it the formal presentation that separated the Landau from the base LTD, which used dual headlamps and clear parking lamp lenses. For 1979, Ford became the last of the Big Three to downsize its full-size cars. The LTD moved from a 121-inch wheelbase to 114.3 inches, shedding roughly fifteen inches of length and 700 to 800 pounds against the 1978 car while gaining interior room. The platform that resulted stayed in production through 2011, running longer than any other platform in North American automotive history, and this is where it starts. The two-door was the low-volume body style when new and was discontinued after 1987, and cars like this one were generally used up and scrapped rather than put away.
