Windy City Warriors

From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Savoy Faire is Everywhere

The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.

Classic Car Overview

By 1979, the (first) muscle car era was mostly over, but there were still a few holdouts packing V8s that could light up the rear tires. Over at Dodge the iconic R/T moniker was affixed to its compact Aspen, which had replaced the Dart. Optioned with 360 cubic inches of Mopar muscle, the relatively light Aspen R/T could hustle away from a standstill with respectable gusto. Indeed, compared to the Mustang and Camaro of the day, it could more than hold its own.

Here we have a 1979 Dodge Aspen R/T tribute car with less than 29,000 original miles. Originally ordered with the 360 4-barrel V8 this car was a sleeper of sorts. That is until the R/T eye candy was added. Examine this car up close and youll see an impressively solid body as well as the original upholstery that looks like its 4, not 40 years old. Rather than having the standard bench seat, this Aspen sport coupe was optioned with the much plusher 40/20/40 split bench with a fold-down center armrest (aka the buddy seat ). Speaking of options, this loaded Aspen also has an automatic transmission, power steering/brakes, A/C, intermittent wipers, fender-mounted turn signal indicators, "Tuff" steering wheel and an AM/FM radio with an 8 track player that still works great. A glove box full of country music 8 tracks go with the car.

Out on the road this aggressive Aspen drives just as you would expect for a very low mileage, well-maintained car. The big V8 fires up and runs great and it will easily spin the tires if you step into it. A chambered exhaust gives it a throaty rumble that a 69 Super Bee would be proud of. The automatic gearbox operates smoothly as do the brakes and the car rides and handles very well.
