Classic Car Overview

1979 Chevrolet C10 Silverado Big 10 Long Bed Pickup

For consignment, a 1979 Chevrolet C10 Silverado Big 10 long bed pickup truck showing 61,708 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. The Big 10 option enhanced suspension and a higher towing capacity and provided a loophole to strict emission regulations at the time, essentially creating a heavy duty C10 or light duty C20.

Due to modifications of the emissions control devices installed by the manufacturer, please check your local, state, and federal laws to determine if this vehicle is applicable for use on public highways in your area.

Exterior
Theres a lot going on that sets this truck apart from other long bed square bodies. Two tone paint was fairly common in this period and this carries Cardinal Red sandwiching Dark Carmine Red which in turn is trimmed in horizontal stainless molding that caps the front. The truck hunkers down over 15-inch Rally wheels and Big 10 is expressed on each side of the bed. That bed is adorned with side rails, a tonneau, and encircled by capped snaps where a previous tonneau may have connected. Out back, the aluminum paneled tailgate is underscored by a heavy duty steel bumper with diamond plate top side while the front retains its straight chrome piece with bumper guards. Notably, there are Big 10 stripes on the hood, period appropriate orange and red in color. Imperfections include extensive dappled chipping in the maroon panel, patina along the window frame line, cracking in the nose of the hood, various chips throughout, a dent in a rear fender and a smaller one on a lower panel.

Interior
Shades of red prevail on the inside beginning with the plastic door panels with an aluminum trim plate bordered scroll art, pleated vinyl pocket map, along with a carpeted lower and both doors present in very nice shape. The bench seat is well preserved in its Carmine crushed red velour, vinyl mid panel, and ornamental buttons. Up front, a two spoke steering wheel is capped by a tachometer on the column while brushed aluminum makes another appearance as faceplates around the standard gauge package, AM/FM radio, and ubiquitous GM A/C panel and vents. A carpeted dash pad covers the extensive cracks that are present underneath. A shifter snakes its way to the driver from the floor which is covered in nice, red carpet while the felt-like red headliner above is in good shape along with the red painted bed under the tonneau.

Drivetrain
Clean and presentable is how we find the 350ci V8 under the hood, fueled by a 4-barrel carburetor and mated to a 4-speed manual with low range 1st gear creeper gear. Power steering, power brakes, and A/C are present along with headers and a newer aluminum radiator.

Undercarriage
Minimal surface rust along with some sling from the carrier bearing is the only thing veering from typical age on this relatively clean undercarriage. The dual exhaust hits an H-pipe, then travels through FlowMaster mufflers on their way to exiting behind each rear wheel. There is no catalytic converter on board. Power brakes are split between front disc and rear drum and suspension includes lower springs and spindles in front and a flip kit for the leaf springs in back.

Drive-Ability
Long and low is the name of the game here and the cabin provides a time capsule space that is now classic! The 350 delivers good punch and sounds good doing it, and the truck tracks straight on 70 series tires while the brakes bring the fun to a crawl, and then a stop. We note only the high beams not working on this buttoned up brick which you can now find in the truck showroom. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

If youve never heard of a Big 10, do a little googling and youll learn all about their heavy duty nature. Driving a 79 C10 is cool, but having the Big 10 version is just a bit cooler and this one is a fine example now benefitting from a lowered stance.
