A nameplate typically reserved for models at or near the pinnacle of Cadillac's lineup, the Eldorado, which entered its ninth generation in 1971, continued to set the tone for General Motor's finest automobiles with its immense size and exceptional luxury. As with the preceeding generation (1967-1970), the 1971 Eldorados were front wheel drive to increase interior space, eliminating the traditional driveshaft/transmission hump of a traditional rear wheel drive vehicle. This, combined with the massive V8 (originally a 500 cubic inch before being downsized in 1977 to 425ci), necessitated a long hood, evoking proportions of pre-war Cadillacs.

As per usual, the Eldorados received a slew of standard features and, with numerous additional optional features allowing buyers to tailor their cars precisely their way. Luxurious that have since become commonplace such as automatic climate control and automatic high-beam assist were available on earlier Cadillacs and were naturally on hand once again. By 1978, the writing was on the wall for the ultra-large vehicles the brand produced, the tenth generation Eldorados released the next year were nearly twenty inches shorter and featuring much smaller engines to meet ever-stricter emissions standards.
