Classic Car Overview

1977 Volkswagen Type 2 ‘T2’ Campmobile

By Westfalia
Chassis no. 2372158367
Body no. 707.06063

67 bhp, 1,970 cc fuel-injected flat four-cylinder engine, four-speed manual transmission, semi-elliptic leaf spring front suspension with shocks and coil springs, half-shaft rear suspension with constant velocity joints, and front disc and rear drum brakes. Wheelbase: 94½ in.

Westfalia-Werke began converting Volkswagen Type 52 buses into Campmobiles in 1951, beginning a decades-long relationship between the two companies. The Campmobile featured a distinctive interior with built-in cabinetry, an interior that converts from dining area to a comfortable bed in moments, and, in its most famous variation, the “pop-top” that offered additional tent-like headroom and ventilation. It was originally marketed towards vacationing families who would appreciate the thrift of a “hotel room on wheels,” but found a ready market with the Flower Children of the 1960s. By the late 1970s the updated, restyled “T2” model was still a potent counterculture symbol and wildly popular with a new generation.

This ‘T2’ Campmobile has remained with its original family owners for its entire life. It was bought new by the current owner’s aunt, and passed into his ownership several years ago. It is noted that all of the body panels are still original, with light surface rust visible only in the rear vent. Most of the factory paint is still intact, aside from the front lower quarter and a small section in the rear, both refinished for purely cosmetic reasons. Remarkably the floors and frame still feature original factory undercoating, with no visible signs of rust or corrosion. The engine and bay are both original and unmodified.

The interior is in largely like-new condition, with only the headliner have been recently replaced along with a single window crank handle and glove box knob. All of the carpets, mats, and door panels are in excellent order, as is the plaid upholstery; the cabinetry is immaculate save a few small scratches. Inspection of the cabinet behind the driver’s seat shows that the spare tire is not only still in place, but is still in its factory plastic wrapping!

This is among the most original, best-preserved ‘T2’ Campmobiles extant, carefully looked-after by its first and only family for the last 43 years, and looking like it has recorded far less than the 74,695 miles noted. It would be ideal for even the most selective Volkswagen collection…or for enjoyment under the Arizona or Florida sun this winter.
