1978-1979 Dodge Li'l Red Express

The Dodge Li'l Red Express set a standard on how to make a great performance truck. All Dodge Li'l Red Express trucks came from the factory painted in Bright Canyon Red in 1978 and Medium Canyon Red in 1979. Every Li'l Red Express was a regular cab Adventurer with a stepside bed.

Classic Car Overview

1977 Dodge D200, 3/4 ton Crew Cab, with an 8 foot bed....not a D250 as shown in the title. Autotrader's descriptive functionality does not include a D200, so I was forced to use the D250 moniker. I installed a 1-ton Dana 70 dually axle which makes it look and behave as a 1-ton truck. This Dodge is big at 22+ feet in length. Countless hours of body work went into this project, which has laser straight body panels, and is all steel(except for fender flares which are fiberglass). New floor pans were welded in, front to back. Rear pans were not available commercially at the time, so I fabricated my own. Paint is a Nason epoxy primer and seal coat, topped with Imron reduced gloss polyurethane. The result is a satin black over a matte finish "Petty Blue" color. The top and bottom of the floor pans and the frame rails have been coated with POR-15. Where there is factory undercoating, I left that intact. The bed has been sprayed with 2 coats of black Raptor Bed Liner. The truck is totally rust free. I'm not a paid professional, but love to restore cars and trucks, and I pay a lot of attention to the details.

The 'built' strong and smooth running 383 is topped by a Edelbrock 4 barrel carb and an Edelbrock Performer intake, backed by a 727 torqueflite automatic, leading to the indestructible Dana 70. Full length dual exhaust sound simply awesome! All driveline parts(not the engine) are original to the truck. Brand new Pirelli Scorpion A/T tires shod on Weld racing wheels at all 4 corners. My concept is for someone to use this truck for hunting/fishing/camping, so I left the back bench seat out, in order to store more gear. I have a rear bench available, you could have, should you decide you want to put it in.

All of the steering and suspension components are tight, and have no slop or looseness, but given their age, upgrades should be a consideration.

Doors: all new rubber components, includes weatherstripping, glass runs, belt weatherstripping(cat wiskers), all of it. Reconditioned or new window regulators for all door windows. All of these parts are new so they still need time for breaking in. Door panels are restored originals.

Interior: bench seat is a NOS period correct seat for 70's Dodge trucks. It's in like new, fantastic shape. I painted(dyed) it to match the interior colors. The back side of the seatback could be covered but not deemed necessary. New full length vinyl floor mat. Steering wheel, dash, and gauge cluster have all been restored. Gauges are factory electric gauges and work as well as 45 year old gauges can. I installed additional mechanical gauges to get a 'true' reading, so you get both. A voltmeter was installed in lieu of the ammeter(for safety). I have the original factory AM/FM radio but left it out in case the new owner wants to upgrade to something more modern, and more to their preference. No AC but I have all the parts if you want to get it working again.

Electrical: 90% of the wiring is brand new. I wanting to eliminate the bulkhead connectors as they are a source of all kinds of electrical problems. Everything electrical works including all switches.

NOTES: This truck came from the factory as an Adventurer model and I have many original parts that could be used to facilitate restoring this truck back to its original condition, including the original 440 engine that it came from the factory with, if that's what you want to do. The odometer reading is irrelevant in my view.....it's actually really a fresh, like new truck. In the spirit of honesty, I've not taken this truck on a long trip or had it in traffic. I've only driven it on the country roads near my house. I'm very confident it would do fine. The mechanical temperature gauge always reads just above 180 degrees when hot. A friend who goes to every car show in the St. Louis region said he he's never seen a Dodge crew cab truck like this one. Some have said it's a 'show truck', and yes it looks like one, but it can be a workhorse too. I believe it to be beautiful, rare and unusual.

I'm not very good at photography so if there something you want to see just let me know!
