1976 Toyota Land Cruiser

Standing as one of Toyotas oldest nameplates, the Land Cruiser has become known for quality engineering and durability, making it the ultimate go-anywhere vehicle. The first variant offered in the United States was the FJ40, a truck with many Jeep-like qualities but the Toyota build quality that one would expect from the manufacturer.

This 1976 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 is finished in Sky Blue and benefits from a restoration by marque specialists Vintage Cruisers of Flagstaff, AZ. The classic boxy shape of the FJ40 looks fantastic in this light blue color, especially when accented by the white removable hard top. Originally an Arizona car, it is believed that the first owner was a photographer for National Geographic who pulled the truck behind his RV on trips around the country. Thanks to living the majority of its life in a warm, dry climate and being garaged when not in use, this Land Cruiser was in remarkable shape from the get go, but improved by the team at Vintage Cruisers.

The spartan interior has been subtly upgraded with black leather seat covers on the original looking front bucket seats, and the two rear jump seats have also been reupholstered. A dealer-installed air conditioning system is fitted which is fantastic to have when the top is still on, and a new Retro-style radio is fitted with Bluetooth capabilities. The original center console has been swapped out for one with a locking storage compartment and the glove box utility light is still present in the vehicle.

Under the hood sits a 4.2-liter 2F inline-6 that produces 135 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque. These engines are known for being essentially bulletproof and carrying countless people into some of the most remote areas of the world for over 60 years. For a bit of additional dependability on this example, a replacement OEM-style carburetor has been installed to ensure it runs as good as the truck looks. Power is then sent through a 4-speed manual gearbox to all four wheels via a switchable part-time four wheel drive system with a 2 speed transfer case. If you find yourself in the rare situation that the truck cant pull itself out of, a Warn 8274 electric winch has been fitted to the front bumper and is ready to help.

Over time, many of these Land Cruisers have been modified, cut up or used to within an inch of their lives. Finding one like this that has been lovingly cared for by just three owners, and conscientiously restored, gives you the opportunity to experience what one of these would have been like when new - but with the addition of a few modern amenities to make it an even better drive.
