Though modest by todays standards these are net ratings measured with full accessories and exhaust - not the old gross numbers. On the earlier scale this engine would have exceeded 250 horsepower. More importantly it delivers broad effortless torque the kind that defined Pontiacs reputation for real-world performance.Backing that power is a factory 4-speed manual transmission either the Muncie M20 (early production) or the Borg-Warner Super T-10 (late production). Both are heavy-duty fully synchronized gearboxes built to handle big V8 torque with confidence. The Super T-10s aluminum case and close-ratio gearing provided crisp precise shifts and kept the 400 in its sweet spot through every gear.
