Rightly regarded as the most desirable variant of Ferraris seminal V-8 berlinetta, the early fiberglass-bodied 308 GTBs offer a compelling blend of innovation, performance, rarity, and enduring style. Introduced in 1975 as the successor to the Dino 246, the 308 represented a turning point in Ferraris evolution, pairing Leonardo Fioravantis striking Pininfarina design with a potent, transverse-mounted quad-cam V-8 engine to create one of the most engaging sports cars of its time.

The earliest 308s were constructed using lightweight fiberglass bodywork Vetroresina in Italian before Ferrari transitioned to conventional steel construction in 1977. This innovative composite coachwork reduced weight dramatically, resulting in a curb weight of approximately 2,315 pounds, nearly 330 pounds lighter than its steel-bodied successors. The weight savings enhanced every aspect of the driving experience, from acceleration and agility to steering response and overall balance, qualities that continue to distinguish the earliest examples as the purest expressions of the 308. With production believed to total as few as 712 examples, these fiberglass-bodied cars rank among the rarest roadgoing Ferraris of the period.

This early production example was formerly part of Phil Bachmans renowned Ferrari collection, remaining in his ownership for more than 25 years. Under Bachmans curation, the car was the subject of a comprehensive multi-year restoration completed in 2025 by Classic and Sport of Edinburg, Virginia. Invoices on file show the body was stripped to bare fiberglass, with over 1,100 labor hours devoted to refining and restoring its lightweight coachwork alone. The body was refinished in its factory-correct Rosso Chiaro (20-R-190), while all major mechanical systems were restored, including a complete rebuild of its revolutionary V-8 engine. The interior was given equal attention, featuring fresh Pelle Beige (VM 3218) leather upholstery accented by Nero trim.

Accompanied by its owners manual, tool roll with jacking kit, and restoration invoices, this 308 GTB Vetroresina combines rarity, provenance, and a high-quality restoration, offering the chance to immediately acquire a landmark Ferrari of enduring significance. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo26/.
