Classic Car Overview

The last convertible. That was the way Cadillac billed the 1976 Eldorado drop-top. The decision to cease building convertibles was explained in a variety of ways: more sporting styling of coupes declining convertible sales more turnpike driving that didnt favor having the top down better sound systems universal air conditioning safety regulations. Ultimately it was a General Motors management decision to control costs. The Eldorado convertible was the signature body style for Cadillac and it was going to go out with style. In its sixth year of the same basic design the Eldorado was long sleek edgy and luxurious. It was an impressive 224.1 in length rode on a 126.3 wheelbase and weighed in at a hefty two and one-half tons. The Eldorado was powered by Cadillacs massive 500 cubic-inch V8 engine topped with a 4-barrel carburetor paired with an automatic transaxle driving the front wheels. The chassis featured independent suspension supported by torsion bar springs up front and self-leveling coils with a beam-axle at the back creating a silky-smooth ride that was Cadillacs hallmark in the Seventies.Cadillacs announcement that convertible production would end in 1976 brought an immediate enthusiastic response from its customers who rushed into their Cadillac dealers to order their very own copy of this masterpiece of open-air opulence even at the base price of $11049. Places in the order queue changed hands for nearly as much. Of course GM did an about-face on their promise of the Eldorado being the last open-topped Cadillac and some owners who bought their Eldos as speculative investments even sued GM! Regardless of it being the last or not the 1976 Eldorado remains a celebrated slice of Americana and symbol of 70s excess in all its glory. This highly original example Cadillacs ultimate 1970s land-yacht shows just 73 miles on the odometer and is presented in time-capsule original condition. Finished elegantly in Cotillion White over a sumptuous black leather interior this flagship Eldorado is lavishly loaded with luxury and convenience options including remote trunk release twilight sentinel lighting climate control AM/FM/8-Track stereo carpeted rubber mats Guidematic headlamp control cruise control hard convertible top boot and more.Exceptionally well-preserved inside and out and showing only minor storage-related shelf wear it retains all original fittings decals owners manual warranty card demo 8-track and even the window sticker still affixed to the glass. Recently it has been fitted with a fresh set of correct-size white wall tires to make this luxury convertible safe to operate however the factory original Uniroyal LR 78-15 full-size spare still resides undisturbed in the trunk along with the unused factory jack assembly. Additionally the factory rubber trunk mat with Cadillac crest is still in place to protect the beautiful original trunk compartment. No other car drives like a 1976 Eldorado convertible. The effortless steering smooth ride and opulent interior appointments make for an enchanting driving experience. The view from the drivers seat is fabulous: a long long hood with the famous Cadillac crest and laurel wreath at its front flanked by peaked fenders with fiber optic turn signal and headlight monitors are all there to remind you and the envious other motorists that you are riding in The Standard of the World of luxury convertibles.Ready to pamper its next caretaker in luxury and style this wonderful 1976 Eldorado presents a rare chance to acquire an all original unrestored beauty that can be driven or displayed with pride.
