Classic Car Overview
Thanks for looking. If you’re reading this, my truck is for sale. I will cancel the ad when it sells. Please also do not email me from this site. It does not notify me unless I log on to look for it AND most the people who email are scammers and not serious. Please just call me. If I do not answer, leave a VM and I will get back to you like we used to do things. Thank you, Rudy 614-203-1947 Take a read if you would. I spent several hours writing this due to website challenges and a great deal of detail What you want to know is hopefully within the body of my description below.
Available now after 2 years of building is my 1975 GMC Jimmy 4x4 High Sierra Trailering Special. It was a clean bodied original tired Arizona truck to start with (I have photos). It underwent a full better than new restoration.
For those who don’t know, 1975 was the last year of the 3 years of production of the full convertible square body Gm trucks. The GMC is far more rare than the Chevy and the Chevy version is very hard to find.
I did this for myself as a challenge away from my tenured national Jeep CJ business of www.rudys-cjs.com. I needed something fresh to do and a new challenge. I built this for myself with the best things I could find and the way I would want it done if I was asking someone to do it for me. It was not built thinking no one will know about this cheap part or shortcut etc.
I personally do not understand the common practice of building a high end anything with a junk yard engine, computer, spliced wiring and used computer (with only 46k miles or whatever). I also don’t like feeling helpless for repairs to the point of custom wiring and custom tunes that one guy in whatever state did to make things work.
This truck was built right from GM Performance catalog with support from any GM dealer across the country.
It has a new GM Performance crate 425HP LS3.
New GM Performance Wiring harness and ECU
A pro built 4L70E 4 speed HD transmission with a NEW GM performance ECU and wiring. The transfer case is rebuilt and the differentials are full of USA made components w new brakes, Warn Premium Lockouts, Moog USA made ujoints and 3.73 gears as is correct for the trailering special. The driveshafts are new from Tom Woods Custom driveshafts.
This is how I believe a body off rotisserie restored collectable should be done.
Further premium items include under the hood include:
$1000 DeWitt custom Aluminum USA made radiator that is a direct fit and comes w 2 top of the line Spal fans. New Optima dry cell battery. All New Accessories including cold AIR CONDITIONING.
I added a full custom dual true Stainless Steel exhaust with an H pipe for scavenging an tone balance. It is welded AND band clamped so things can be serviced easily.
I also have new BFG AT 31" Tires on New USA made wheels. So many for profit builders finish their project with cheap Chinese tire which annoys me to no end.
This is not a jacked to the moon custom stage coach. It drives and rides better than new w a stock suspension and new poly bushings.
The next least favorite thing for me in a build is:
….either the stock instrument cluster running old gauges w all kinds of adapter reading erroneous reading from a premium engine.
…or the Pro steet race car look inside full of Autometer gauges cut into a custom piece of aluminum.
I was thrilled to discover Dakota digital and bought there $1500 OEM looking instrument cluster. I also bought their communicator that interfaces with the connector on the GM harness for accurate readings reported directly from the computer that makes the engine run so well
The cluster looks stock at first glance until you start it. At that point it is a mix of 1975 and better then new Corvette. You can set your own warnings, displays, backlight colors, or just use it. I am so impressed with them and there tech support.
The interior of this truck could not be replicated as it was a result of a 29k donor. Usually when you see a restored truck it is full of Chinese door panels, seat covers, replacement dash etc. This truck is VERY original inside with a beautiful saddle interior. Look at the scroll work on the door panels! I even retained an 8track player that was in it with the ELO (Electric Light Orchestra) tape. I did not wire it.
The floor of the truck is fully pro lined so the metal is protected and the truck is useable. I had special carpet made that snaps in and out for easy cleaning.
I also made a provision for fuel pump access in the rear with a Stainless Steel door. Modern vehicles need far less repai than old ones but one of the worst jobs that will leave you dead in the water is a fuel pump. This truck has a new 31 gallon factory style tank w a baffle in it for the electric pump. If the pump fails, the rear trailer hitch has to be removed and fight out a 31 gallon tank that could weigh up to 200 pounds. My truck can have the pump in and out in minutes the way I believe all should be done.
The exterior of the truck is very nice and was fully sandblasted before reassembly with all new rubber. It was professionally painted top and bottom with 1970 Chevelle forest green metallic. New windshield glass and rebuilt wing windows. The top is a very nice Softopper brand and also comes with screens to allow air flow. The windows also roll up. I see no pint in having a full convertible truck with a hard top on it however I do have the original one available for this should you want it for extra. These are VERY hard to find.
I learned a lot in the hundreds of hours I spent building this rare machine. One of the things is that it is harder to build a GMC than it is a Chevy as the support is less. I also learned an LS swap can be done without custom hacking and specialized tuning.
I am selling this as it is too nice for me to enjoy and I genuinely do not need it. My dually makes me money and I do not have a vacation home or cabin however I couldn’t think of a better and more unique machine for such a place. I believe anyone could drive and enjoy this and if you don’t drive it in salt, I expect the value to be retained far better than any new Rubicon, Land Rover etc you might consider AND your neighbor isn’t going to have one of these.
I will accept trades of Jeep CJs, and clean Jeep TJs, LJS, JK or JL Wranglers. Pretty much anything buy a YJ. If you read this, it is not sold. Again, if you email me, I will not see it unless I check this site AND most the messages from here are scammers. Please just call. Thank you very much. Rudy 614-203-1947
