If you're a fan of vintage Japanese cars, be sure to check out Nissan's online heritage site. There are tons of vintage Nissan pics and specs going all the way back to the 1920s. Each featured car or truck has relevant specs and a little "detail" tab that gives some background on that specific car.
The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.
Classic Car Overview
This 1973 Volvo 1800ES is rare two-door, four-person Volvo station wagon with an excellent condition original four-cylinder 20-liter B20 engine and extensive restoration, inside and out. It is a car in a family that has a star-powered history and it does too! The current owner purchased it from Nancy Wilson, of the famed band, Heart.
Perhaps more importantly, one of these cars sold at an auction for over $92,000! It was the shot heard round the Volvo world: a 1973 1800ES sold for a record-setting $92,400 at Bonhams' Greenwich Concours d'Elegance Auction, in June 2014, say Mark McCourt, of Hemmings Magazine.
While this car as a little more mileage than the $92,000 one, it does rival it for its excellent restored condition, with 135,426 miles, baby-blue leather seats, and chrome that reflects back the beauty of the world.
According to Swedish Iron AKA Volvo 1800 by Bill Webb only 5005 1973s were made; this is one of the 1,449 that were shipped to the United States.
Car and Driver magazine has said, "People have tried to make sports cars out of station wagons, but it took Volvo to successfully reverse the concept."
Based on the historical values assigned by Hagerty Valuation Tools and an appraisal by Lance Lambert of Vintage Vehicle Productions, this cars selling price is $30,000.
The Vintage Vehicle Productions Assessment (by Lance Lambert)
RECONCILIATION: 1973 Volvo 1800ES models are considered desirable by the special interest automobile community. Auction results over the past five years [2007-2012] have indicated a steady growth in market value that is likely to continue into the future. Additional consideration is given to the value added by the previous celebrity ownership.
The standard procedure for establishing an automobiles market value is to first establish what condition rating is to be utilized (see attached condition definitions). This appraisal is based on the overall rating of the subject being 2.25.
What does a 2.5 rating mean?
The rating is based on a 1-4 rating system, with a #2 being very good. Here is the explanation from the assessment.
CONDITION #2: Very Good Well restored, of a combination of superior restoration and excellent original. It is also an extremely well maintained original automobile showing very minimal wear. Except for the very closest inspection, a number two vehicle may appear as a number one. The number two vehicle will take the top award in many judged shows, except when compared to a number one example in its own class. It may be driven 800 to 1,000 miles each year to shows, on tours and simply for pleasure.
VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER DEFINITION: 183

A STAR-STUDDED HISTORY
Roger Moore, televisions Saint, drove a Volvo 1800, as did several crown princes, princesses, a king of Sweden, and the daughter of King Hussein in Jordan. Irv Gordon made the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest car mileage (1,790,000+) on his 1966 model. Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno have also owned one, as did Raquel Welch, and members of the band The Who and the Grateful Dead. There also lots of other European stars (football players, comedians, and actors) that owned this car as well.
As to the Volvo 1800ES, its snazzy successor, the 1973 Playboy Playmate of the year drove a pink one. The King of Jordon drove a yellow one. And Harry Potter (also known as Daniel Jacob Radcliffe) is also seen here with a red one.
As to the one being sold here, it too has been owned by a famous person Nancy Wilson of the band Heart. This group is known worldwide, has had numerous hit records and they continue to perform at sold out concerts. It is my opinion that this previous ownership by Nancy Wilson adds market value to the subject vehicle. No documentation was provided that indicates any past ownership.
