VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

The GT6 was a rare GT variation of the Spitfire, in a fastback body shell, with a 2.0L version of the 6-cylinder TR6 engine. The car followed a fastback variation of the 1965 winning Spitfire racing program at Le Mans.

This 1973 GT6 was a former show car, and had been restored and in excellent condition before I purchased it in 2015. The car, with a rebuilt original motor (bored 20 over and with a Crane ignition) runs VERY strong. It has been a garage queen, and probably only driven less than 100 miles since my purchase, just regularly started and driven around the block. The motor has approximately 20K miles since the rebuild.

Although the body, paint and mechanicals had been restored in 1998, the interior was still original. The car has a very nice dash, but soft parts were showing some signs of wear, and I wanted it perfect. So I then purchased 'many' new parts from Moss and Rimmer Bros., and updated the interior to a stock Chestnut Brown vinyl interior with black carpet. I also upgraded the wheels and tires. The paint from 1998 still looks pretty good, with some age-appropriate small chips, on hood latch catches, door jambs, etc. (the car has mostly been garaged).

The new carpet & headliner were replaced, the seats and headrests were recovered, and the rest of the interior was installed. It truly is an amazing GT6.

Recent refresh of the 1998 restoration - recently installed, along with maintenance items (A total of about $10,000 added for parts and upgrades since I purchased in 2015 -- $6,700 of recent receipts just for the labor performed):
- Seats have been newly recovered in Chestnut Brown; with pads & trim from Rimmer Bros.
- New matching interior door panels and rear interior panels
- A refurbished (like new) steering wheel
- New RetroSound vintage-look radio
- New headliner
- New Smiths oil pressure gauge
- New lower front spoiler (not installed but comes with the car)
- New stainless performance full exhaust
- New Rimmer performance springs (to lower front ride height)
- Front round Wipac driving lights (come with car)
- Original wheels also come with the car
