Classic Car Overview

1973 Plymouth Road Runner Coupe

For consignment, a 1973 Plymouth Road Runner coupe showing 87,854 miles, but the true miles are unknown due to a title exemption. This one has its numbers matching drivetrain including engine and transmission and will come to you with a pile of documents and receipts.

Exterior
This well optioned car came with FY1 paint, Lemon Twist, now in two stage form and retaining Plymouths whimsical paint naming pedigree. But its the aggressive black stripe package that sets this car apart, riding the roof like a segmented basket handle and wrapping the power bulge, serving as background to highlight the 340 call outs and emerging from modified Naca-like faux ducts on the hood. In profile, chrome bumpers provide the bookends with modest wrap arounds and Mopar Rallye wheels feature letters out 225/70R14 tires with a mid 2020 date code. The pride of Warner Brothers, the cartoon bird, makes an appearance in decal form on the decklid and the nose, looking as cocky and crisp as ever. Overall, paint, body, and trim are great. Imperfections include some bubbling down low and a paint run.

Interior
Carrying the black of the stripes to the inside, here we have handsome vinyl clad doors with minimal decorative trim and both present cleanly, leading you to the inside to find a very nice split bench seat and a bench out back and both are in great shape. No frills by todays standards, the classic muscle car has a simple three spoke steering wheel leading to the simulated wood faced instrument cluster taking in your basic gauges and an AM radio. The column shift leaves the floor open where black carpet provides cover, all under a clean headliner with attached shoulder belts, and use was optional at the time! A gray vinyl mat covers a nicely painted trunk floor.

Drivetrain
Clean and colorful is how we find the numbers matching 340ci V8 under the hood hiding a 4-barrel carburetor under the orange air cleaner. Its mated to the numbers matching A727 3-speed automatic transmission that sends power back to the 8 3/4 rear with 3.23 gears. Our Road Runner has power steering and power brakes and the bay is showroom fresh looking.

Undercarriage
Its super clean underneath as well, with dual exhaust running through stock style mufflers and one has a dent but remains intact, and sends the tailpipes up and over the rear axle and terminating at visible machine gun tips. Disc up front and drum in back for the power brakes and suspension consists of torsion bars at the head and leaf spring in the tail.

Drive-Ability
The once unloved generation of Road Runners are now seeing more interest and were out to prove this a very worthy candidate for your next or first Mopar. The healthy exhaust note fills our receiving bay, and we roll the 340 onto the tarmac where this bird runs the road with more than adequate power underwing, smooth automatic shifts, and acceleration that plants a smile on our face. Our functionality test reveals that all operational items on board work as they should. While Classic Auto Mall represents that these functions were working at the time of our test drive, we cannot guarantee these functions will be working at the time of your purchase.

The further we get from 1973, the more desirable these second gen Road Runners seem to be getting. The road runner bird is in the cuckoo family, and youd have to be cuckoo not to find this car appealing. Lemon Twist paint, numbers matching drivetrain, clean interior. Thats a Mopar trifecta!
