Classic Car Overview

To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION WITHOUT RESERVE at RM Sothebys The Monterey Auction event, 13 - 15 August 2026.
Offered Without Reserve $200,000 - $250,000 USD

  • One of the most sophisticated and charismatic Italian performance cars of the 1970s
  • Comprehensive, multi-year restoration completed in 2020 by Benchmark Motor Studio of Covington, Louisiana
  • Numbers-matching 4.9-liter, mid-mounted V-8 engine, per Maserati Storico
  • Finished in its factory-correct livery of Giallo over black leather upholstery
  • Accompanied by a tool roll with jacking kit, numerous restoration invoices, and copies of factory workshop manuals

Unveiled in 1971 with coachwork penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Italdesign, the Maserati Bora combined crisp, wedge-shaped styling with motorsport-derived engineering and advanced Citron hydraulic systems to create one of the most technically sophisticated and visually arresting grand tourers of the 1970s.

The Bora offered here, chassis 504, is a numbers-matching 4.9-liter example that benefits from a comprehensive nut-and-bolt restoration completed in 2020 by Benchmark Motor Studio of Covington, Louisiana. In addition to confirming its factory engine, Maserati Storico records show that chassis 504 was completed on 21 March 1973 for delivery to Los Angeles, California, and finished as it is today in Giallo over black leather upholstery.

Records document a no-expense-spared restoration that began with a complete disassembly, after which the body was entrusted to a specialist facility where it was stripped to bare metal, repaired as required, then dipped and e-coated to provide superior long-term corrosion protection. The cars numbers-matching 4.9-liter V-8 and its ZF transaxle were comprehensively rebuilt using factory-correct components, with carefully selected enhancements including JE pistons, stainless-steel valves, and a modern ignition system. Every major mechanical system was restored to an exceptionally high standard, including the suspension, braking, hydraulics, and electrical systems.

The sophisticated Citron hydraulic system was extensively renewed with new accumulators, pumps, reservoirs, rams, seals, and lines throughout. Inside, the cabin was sympathetically restored, with considerable effort reportedly devoted to preserving as much of the original leather upholstery as possible, including the seats, console, and door panels. Most recently, in April 2026, the car received an extensive $8,300 service by Gran Turismo of Los Angeles, including installation of a new clutch. Accompanied by a substantial file of restoration invoices documenting the remarkable scope of work, the car is also supplied with its tool roll, jacking kit, and copies of factory workshop manuals.

An exceptional example of Maseratis landmark mid-engine grand tourer, chassis 504 combines an outstanding restoration with the engineering sophistication and timeless design that have established the Bora as one of the most sophisticated and charismatic Italian performance cars of the 1970s.To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/auctions/mo26/.
