Classic Car Overview

Almost 50 years ago, Ford launched its Better Ideas ad campaign in print, radio and on television. Those ideas included the Mustang, which had grown since its inception in 1964. This mustang has recently undergone a comprehensive cosmetic restoration with a rarely seen color combination. Made in Fords Dearborn, Michigan factory, this example was made on May 30, 1973, shipped to Allegra Ford in North Riverside, Illinois (DSO Code 41) and sold on July 5, 1973. This example is one of 11,853 Mustang two-door convertibles made in 1973. This is a somewhat rare Mustang in that it was one of only 277 examples ordered with a special signal green exterior paint; one of 144 examples with special paint/trim codes; one of 1,957 examples with this engine and transmission combination; one of 776 examples ordered from this district service office; and one of 2,740 ordered with an AM/FM stereo. As reported on the deluxe Marti Report in hand. This car left the line with the following options a 351 CID V-8 engine, a three-speed automatic transmission, white sidewall tires, convenience group, power steering, rim blow deluxe steering wheel, deluxe bumper group, Select-Aire air-conditioning, AM/FM stereo, tinted glass, trim rings, hubcaps, power front disc brakes, color-keyed carpeting and more. Dressed in a special paint, Signal Green, the cars paint and trim are in overall excellent order, with contrasting silver trim and a silver rear wing. The newer power-folding vinyl top is white and looks good. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the battery looks good and the body-colored front and rear chrome bumpers fit tightly to the body. This pony rolls on BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires, size 235/60R15 at every corner. Each one is mounted to a factory alloy wheel. The wheels are in good shape while the tires are in very good condition. Under the big hood is a 351 CID Cleveland V-8 engine with a two-barrel carburetor (code H). Backing this motor is a C6 Select-Shift Cruise-O-Matic three-speed automatic transmission (code U) and a 2.75:1 rear end (code 2). Driver convenience features include Select-Aire air-conditioning, power steering and power brakes with discs in front. Inside, this car has a snazzy white knitted vinyl interior (code CW) (high-back front buckets and a rear bench seat) that is in overall excellent condition with color-keyed carpeting. The two-spoke, Rimblow deluxe steering wheel Ford used during the 1970s is present. a/c blows, but not cold. The dash and inner door panels are in excellent shape, too, while the center console and its console-mounted shifter look great. A factory AM/FM stereo completes the interior. Documentation includes a framed copy of the cars Marti Report and other related documents. Convertibles were getting scarcer in the wake of the first energy crisis and rising insurance rates. Convertible competition to this droptop Mustang in 1973 included Chevrolets Corvette, Dodges Challenger and MGs MGB. This Mustang Convertible is a fine example of a droptop before federal intrusion made factory convertibles a thing of the past until the mid-1980s. If you prefer your convertibles with a bit of heft, with long doors and room for three hours, please consider this ponycar with the special paint.
