In the late 1960s, Citron was riding high on the success of its revolutionary DS model and sought to venture into the hotly contested sports car market. However, as plans progressed, the design morphed into a high-speed grand tourer with continent-crossing performance and unparalleled luxury. In 1968, Citron acquired the Maserati marque, who supplied the 2.7-litre V-6 engine to propel the new SM. The model had no shortage of advanced features, including high-pressure fully adjustable suspension and four-wheel disc brakes, packaged in a stunning body styled by Robert Opron.
This car pairs its Trident-designed engine with a five-speed manual gearbox. Under Dutch ownership, the SM is documented to have been restored by two workshops based in the Netherlands, with work starting in 2000 and concluding in 2011. Maserati specialist Garage Helfferich rebuilt the engine and Blikwerk Garage, known for its meticulous restorations of DS and Chapron-built Citrons, stripped the interior and refinished the exterior in its current gold hue. An extensive grouping of restoration invoices accompany the car and add up to just under 175,000. These bills for the SM, an icon of French automotive styling now offered at auction in Paris, can be viewed in full in the accompanying history file.
