VW Kombi Van Seeing Resurgence in Popularity

The Volkswagen Kombi van reached iconic status, with even a school lunch box fashioned in its image. During those early years, the Volkswagen Microbus morphed into various forms. From a cargo carrier with no windows behind the driver's seat to a windowed passenger van with three rows of seats, the possibilities seemed endless.

Classic Car Overview

The Citron DS is undoubtedly one of the most ambitious influential and distinctive automobiles ever produced. Conceived as a family sedan for the rapidly growing middle class the DS seemed a four-wheeled spaceship in contrast to the utilitarian yet immensely successful Tin Snail 2CV that mobilized much of Western Europe throughout the postwar era. Styled by Flamino Bertoni who also penned the ground-breaking prewar Citron Traction Avant (Front Drive) the DS featured front-wheel drive advanced self-leveling hydro-pneumatic independent suspension high-pressure hydraulic brakes and a distinctively sculpted aerodynamic body that looked as though the design was lifted straight from the pages of a science-fiction novel. The DS was so revolutionary and involved that Citron nearly went bankrupt developing it recalling the equally bold Traction Avant project which spurred Michelins takeover of Citroen in 1934. However when it was introduced at the 1955 Paris Salon the DS created a frenzy with 12000 orders for the radical new Citron reportedly taken during the first day! The DS went on to a production run of nearly 1.5 million examples through 1975 comprising the DS19 DS21 and DS23 powered by 1.9-liter 2.1-liter and 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engines respectively. Versatile 4-door sedan and station wagon body styles were offered in an array of trim levels and specifications throughout production. Universally praised by auto-magazine road testers and owners the DS earned consistent accolades throughout production for its uncanny ability to waft almost effortlessly and at heady speeds over the roughest roads while delivering amazing passenger comfort. Collectively these very fine and highly advanced automobiles remain true benchmarks for unbridled creativity and innovation in automobile design. The collector-grade example offered here is a highly desirable late-production 1973 DS23 with the ultimate-specification 2.3-liter engine and 5-speed manual gearbox offering a highly engaging driving experience. This DS23 also features the range-topping Pallas trim level and upholstery for additional comfort and exclusivity. External features include the refreshed styling cues by Robert Opron including covered headlamps and hydraulically swiveling driving lamps which entered production with the DS21 in 1967 and continued through the end of DS23 production in 1975.Attractively finished in shiny and consistent Metallic Silver paintwork this highly collectible and enjoyable DS23 is complemented by good-quality stainless steel bumpers and correct Pallas trim and identification badges. The paintwork is good overall with some finish imperfections and touch-ups noted on close inspection. The excellent and inviting Natural Tan and Beige two-tone leather interior features the upscale Pallas trim level and amenities including central and door-panel armrests front and rear front-seat headrests tidy Tan carpeting and a dash-mounted clock. This car is a rare example fitted from new with air conditioning thought the system is currently inoperative. Greeting the driver Citrons trademark single-spoke steering wheel is a fascinating artwork in its own right plus the unusual short-throw gearchange lever placed directly to the right of the steering column. An electronic tachometer Jaeger speedometer comprehensive warning lights and a coolant-temperature gauge monitor vital functions. A very nicely fitted digital AM/FM CD stereo head unit and front and rear loudspeakers occupy custom enclosures to the floor front door panels and rear package tray respectively all installed with a high-quality factory-style appearance. Correct wheels wheel covers and of course Michelin radial tires finish off this DS23 Pallas nicely.Clean and honestly presented throughout including the underside of the sleek body and the chassis the DS23 also features a correct and maintained engine and engine compartment. Serviced by a Citron specialist and regularly enjoyed by its owner the DS23 runs and drives great with the renowned hydro-pneumatic systems operating as they should. Offered in excellent mechanical and cosmetic condition this 1973 Citron DS23 Pallas is ready for continued enjoyment in unparalleled comfort and luxury. Perhaps best of all it will surely garner admirers and spark friendly conversations with amazed onlookers wherever it goes.
