1988-1992 Chevrolet Camaro 1LE: The Original Factory Racer

With all the hoopla surrounding the new Camaro 1LE, let's look back at the original.

The story of the ZL1 Camaro, fitted with that rarest of the rare, all-aluminum 427 big-block V-8, is one that has often been told: How only 69 were made, how they exploited the GM option-ordering system, and how they've become the Camaro guy's ultimate Camaro.

Classic Car Overview

For many muscle car enthusiasts, 1973 was the end of an era that may never return. Theres no question that high-quality cars like this 1973 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 tribute are always going to have distinction because this helped the legend go out with a bang. So with a vivid red and black paint scheme, a performance V8 heart, and good option to boot, this is a true GM muscle car hero. Code 75 Medium Red is this cars original shade, and thats exactly the respray shade it was treated to not long ago. It looks great on a car like this because the bold color is exactly what brings out the aggressive side of this sports coupe. The modern application has the kind of luster that will sparkle in the sunshine and reflect the neon at night, and although it isnt perfect by any means, its an honest driver-quality finish that looks great when this Early 2nd Gen is bombing down the road. This is a split-bumper conversion, but no one can argue that its an improved look and its especially important because 1973 was the final year for the iconic split-bumper design. And while they were investing in this car, they also added great Z28 tribute touches. From the big billet grille up front to the rear ducktail spoiler, the car looks fast from any angle and you simply cant go wrong with black Z28 stripes and an aggressive cowl hood. And its all set apart with the five-spoke Rally wheel package that was specific to Z28s, set on a killer, aggressive rake. We always love it when the exterior stripes are a preview of the interior color, and the code 775 Black Vinyl cabin doesnt disappoint. And it only gets better on a machine thats had the right investments to be as fresh, clean, and comfortable as this one. The high back bucket seats are supportive and comfortable, especially with the center console in-between. This coordinating black on the seats, carpeting, door panels, and dash really help with this Camaros menacing attitude. So while you still have nice features like an original AM/FM stereo and factory air conditioning thats been upgraded to R134a refrigerant, this is a drivers machine at its heart. Your right hand will be instantly attracted to the B&M shifter that controls the TH350 automatic below. Your left hand will love the NK4 steering wheel with correct corded grip, even more so because it rests on a factory tilt column. Out back the trunk has been finished with proper spatter paint and provides ample room for all of your car show goodies. The 350 cubic-inch V8 looks correct and tidy in the engine bay, a welcomed sign in all the best driving Camaros. You can tell by everything from the brake booster to the hoses that the supporting components are built to be dependable, and that this Camaro hasnt been thrashed about throughout the recent years. But on a Camaro like this, power is essential, too, thats why the V8 inhales deeply through a two-barrel carburetor, and it exhales with authority out of the factory-style headers that feed the correct single exhaust set-up. Best of all, you have solid control over this power and muscle car soundtrack thanks to the TH350 3-speed automatic transmission. Also take some time to look at the undercarriage photos. There youre not only going to see a clean and honest presentation, but youll also see that this Camaro comes equipped with power front disc brakes and power steering. Black Rally wheels match the black stripes wonderfully, and theyre wrapped in 225/70/15 front and 275/60/15 rear white-letter radials to complete the total package. This is a pivotal year for the Camaro, and this car takes it very seriously. With all the right original stylings and just enough of the right upgrades, its the perfect attention-grabbing classic youll love to drive. Dont let this opportunity pass you by. Call today!!!
