Lights! Cameras! Cars!

One thing that the crew at Volo Auto Museum understands is that context is everything. They have gone the extra mile to display each movie car with memorabilia and signage that brings the scene to life. The museum features actual movie props such as Tom Cruise's racing seat from Days Of Thunder.

Classic Car Overview

This is a 1972, VW Transporter. Built in 10/1971, this VW was known as the Zwitterbus, as it was the symbiosis of the type 2a and type 2b, and was only produced in this trim for one year. This is well documented in the book, The VW Bus: History of a Passion, by Jörg Hart, on pages 85 and 102. The bus has been in our care for more than 10 years and has finally completed a 3 year, body on, restoration to as near factory stock as possible. The body was media blasted to bare metal. All of the body panels were carefully sanded, massaged and smoothed out to factory new. There is no bondo or filler of any kind anywhere on this bus. The doors and hatches were reformed to factory specifications so they fit tight with no air leaks at speed. In addition, all the chrome trim is original and was painstakingly massaged and buffed out to look factory new. The front turn signal lights as well as the vertical multi-function rear lights are original and were polished to look as new as possible. The entire floor was cut out and replaced with new metal as there was too much rust for my tolerance. The seats were rebuilt with new springs and frame work and recovered with new, factory stock, upholstery, as were the door panels, wall panels and overhead ceiling liner. The electrical system is new and period correct. All lighting works as it did in 1972 with better headlights. The black carpeting was custom made for this bus as it originally came with thin rubber mats that were worn out and allowed too much noise into the cab.

Mechanically, the bus is fitted with a 2.1 L engine, period correct, custom built for this bus, as seen in the photo gallery still wrapped in plastic, and is fueled by dual Weber IDF carburetors. It was spec'd to match a Porsche 914 engine and is mated to a new German built, 4 speed manual transmission. It has no problems with hills or maintaining freeway speeds. All other components are new including the brakes, Fox performance shocks, all bushings, bearings, and steering linkages, as well as the header and exhaust. The steering box is rebuilt as a new one doesn't exist. And, the dash, steering wheel and stick shift lever are all original with the exception of the tachometer as I wanted one. All rubber seals around the doors and windows have been replaced with new German products including around the original glass. The heater piping and venting is sorted and it actually gets quite warm when it's cold outside. It is also important to know that the tires are new and have less than 200 miles on them.

Special features include the custom stereo system from Crutchfield that features a RetroSound AM/FM/Bluetooth Tuner, subwoofer, amp and 4 speakers that would rival a live concert performance. And, a Garmin Mini Dash Cam for safety in traffic.

Lastly, the bus is dressed in the beautiful Porsche Gulf Blue with the Grand Prix White roof and bumpers, and, Porsche Signal Orange striping. It is stunning in person.

Nothing has been left out and this bus could drive across the country today if a person so wished it. This would be a great addition to someone's collection just as it would be a great daily driver. The price is reflective of the time, effort, blood, sweat and tears that went into saving this bus from oblivion in the field we found it in.

I do not need help selling it and will not consider offers from a third party. I would however, consider gold and silver as part or all of the value. I will consider reasonable offers. But, I will not respond to AI derived auto messages, phone calls or texts that don't leave a message or a name.
