1972 Triumph TR6

When you think of classic roadsters the Triumph TR6 is one of the most recognizable one from a bygone era. At one time you would see a Triumph or MG roadster on every street corner of most major cities around the USA being used as daily drivers, these cars appealed to young buyers looking for affordable, stylish automobiles. The British Invasion of sports cars began in the 1950s and lasted until the late 70s with MG, Triumph, and Austin Healey. The TR6 was one of Triumphs most successful models with over 83,000 of them being sold Stateside. Launched in 1968 and built until 1976, the TR6 was designed by German coachbuilder Karmann and was known for its muscular looks, distinct Kammtail rear end, and glorious sounding 2.5L inline 6-cylinder motor. Built as a traditional body-on-frame design, the TR6 also had 4-wheel independent suspension with disk brakes up front, and a 4-speed manual gearbox, and rack and pinion steering.

This 1972 TR6 was built in March of the same year, built to USA specifications for export and sold new by Genser & Forman Inc of Newark. The car is finished in its correct beautiful color combo of Damson Red #17 over New Tan #33 vinyl interior with black soft top and retains its original engine #CC80770UE which is verified by a British Heritage Trust Certificate. The current mileage of 60,318 is believed to be true especially when looking over the car and its originality. This car has the desirable and functional optional overdrive which makes driving it on the freeways much more enjoyable. The current owner purchased the car from Daniel Schmitt & Co in May of 2021 with 59,600 miles, a dealership in St. Louis, MO known for selling top quality classics. He has used the car only sparingly since, driving it on sunny weekends or taking it to local car shows. The car was given a high quality respray at some point using a modern 3-stage finish. Earlier ownership can be traced to a Mr. Cameron who owned the car from 2009 to 2020, he purchased the car from Connors Motor Car Company of Pennsylvania with 55,000 miles in June of 2009. During his ownership he moved the car between Santa Fe, NM and then later San Jose, CA. Much work has been carried out in maintenance and refurbishment over the years by specialists including rebuilding the gearbox, overdrive unit, and replacing the clutch kit in 2009/2010 at 55,671 miles. The engine was refreshed in 2010 including replacement of the timing chain and crankshaft pulley. The SU carburetors were rebuilt in 2015. New Uniroyal redline tires were fitted in 2017 and still look almost new having less than 4000 miles on them and no signs of aging. According to some previous advertising, this car spent its early years in Florida, and then in the 1980/90s was later part of a collection in North Carolina. The car was serviced in 2023 by BritSport of Seattle, WA and included a carburetor adjustment, oil change, gearbox fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and inspection. We have just put the car through our shop here and given it a fresh oil change, new spark plugs, and performed a complete paint correction detail. Everything is in good working condition; all lamps, signals, horn, wipers, heater, choke, gauges, and overdrive function correctly. Even the original Triumph AM/FM radio works well!

The car features its correct 2.5L inline 6-cylinder motor # CC80770UE which has good compression and pulls strong throughout the rev band. The soft top looks to be original and is still in decent usable shape aside from a few snaps that are missing. Both the full tonneau cover and soft top boot are present as well as the full size spare and jack mounted in the trunk. There is also an owners manual, shop manual, and parts catalog that accompany the car as well as a binder of records going back to 2009 to current. This TR6 has some nice additions including more reliable electronic ignition, and a tremendous sounding dual Monza exhaust system. The paint is in excellent condition with better than factory gloss and luster and only very minimal road chips to the front lower section if you look hard enough. The chrome and brightwork are in great shape with mirror-like shine. All glass is clear and free of chips or wiper scratches. The original dash wood is also in remarkable condition and the dash top is free from cracks. The car has a clean WA title.

This is one of the best driving TR6s we have had the pleasure of representing, the transmission shifts easily up/down in all gears, the car tracks strait, both brakes and clutch feel excellent. The engine fires up easily and idles smooth. The car is ready to reward its new owner with style and performance and would make a great addition to any collection or will make a great first time classic.
