Classic Car Overview
I purchased this 1972 Olds Cutlass S on November 19, 1992 with not quite 36,000 miles showing on the odometer. The VIN number beginning with 3G87H2R indicated it was a Cutlass S Holiday Coupe manufactured in Arlington, Texas. The car included factory power front disc brakes, power steering, 3 speed automatic on the column, factory air conditioning and 442 hood louvers. The 350 V8 was fed by a 2-barrel carburetor and had a single exhaust system making 160 hp. The 14 steel wheels were adorned with hub caps and had a standard front bench seat. I thought the old girl had potential.
On April 2, 1997, the car went into the body shop. The entire front end was removed. Both front fender lower quarter panels had new metal patch panels welded in the area behind the front wheels. New front bumper and grill. Front and rear windshields removed and resealed. The front windshield had a leak that ran down into the driver side floor pan and the leaking windshield was fixed. I had found a trunk lid in Arizona with no rust, the same color as the car and that was installed. 14 x 7 SS wheels were also installed. A completely new paint job was then applied. A new 442 rear bumper with exhaust cutouts, complete with new lenses was installed. From this point forward, the Cutlass was and is kept in the garage. In 1998, I then took the swivel bucket seats out of my 71 Cutlass Supreme and had both reupholstered along with the rear seat. I installed the seats and new carpet as well. Currently, driver seat mechanism does not lock in place while in a forward position. I also found and installed a 442 steering wheel with the horn button the same tan color as my interior. I began removing the old interior door panels as well as other worn-out interior in anticipation of finishing off the interior. That didnt happen, but a divorce did happen. In early 2000, I acquired a 1997 Chrysler Sebring that became my daily driver. The Olds Cutlass then became my weekend fun car and was never driven in the rain again.
In 2005, a longtime motorhead friend called me up to see if I would be interested in installing a big block 455 in my car. He had the same make, model, color and year as my car, but his was a convertible with a 455. I believe he planned on putting in a Chevy 502 engine in his car. Anyway, what was supposed to be a long weekend engine swap, turned out to be a 6-month overhaul of the engine bay, front and rear suspension and driveline. The 455 engine that was installed had been bored .030 over and had been rebuilt. The motor had roughly 15,000 +/- miles on it upon installation into my car. I have since put another 14,000 +/- miles on the motor. March 2023, I heard a slight ticking noise coming from valve train on the passenger side of the car. A breakdown of the engine found excessive wear on a couple of cam lobes from either no zinc in oil and/or one of the right-side valve roller rockers hitting valve cover? The motor was refreshed at that time and work done is listed below under maintenance records. The only thing not working under the hood currently is the a/c system.
The car has not been back in the body shop since last being painted back in 1997. The drivers side floor pan needs to be replaced as evident in pictures of the underside of the car. I do not have a new drivers side floor pan in my possession. Also, the trunk floor pans, fuel tank, tank straps and supporting hardware need to be replaced. I have these new parts that I ordered from Year One and are included with the sale of the car. Also included, I have a new 442 rear bumper with exhaust cutouts, 4 new taillight lenses, taillight and trunk wiring harness that runs from the back seat to the tag and taillight, all from Year One. I have other used parts that go along with the car as well. Parts list and parts included are shown in photos. I have included photos of areas of the car where the paint is bubbling, and rust issues will need attention. The right front fender was scraped up pulling into my garage and getting too close to the drywall. Also, it moved the front bumper over to the left a bit. Overall, the body presents itself well as it has gathered attention wherever I drove her over the past 33 years. Many have asked me if I would consider selling the car, but I never had any intention of selling her. Until now.
In 2018, I had to retire early due to health reasons. The right shoulder I tore up while serving in the Air Force was now giving me grief that was sometimes debilitating. The problems with my right shoulder have reached the point that it is affecting my back in the worst way. So, I dont have the ability of working on my car anymore. And thats part of the fun of owning a muscle car.
The vehicle is currently insured through Haggerty Insurance Agency for a Guaranteed Value of $20,000. Copy of the policy included in photos. Copies of all work done over the years on the car are available for review. Clean Georgia title in hand.
