From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.
The no-frills Savoy two-door sedan was home to another engine of considerable repute, the infamous 413 Max Wedge, a Super Stock monster block Chrysler introduced in the spring of 1962.

If youre an Oldsmobile fan, what would your ultimate Olds look like? How about a stunning 1972 Cutlass 442 W-30 Tribute wearing slick red paint and packing a thundering 455 cubic inch big block. Of course, a few mods like power brakes/steering, air conditioning, and a little more horsepower never hurt, and the result is a brutal 442 W30 tribute that looks and drives like youve always imagined. If youre an Olds fan, youll recognize the riveting red paint right away. Between the stripes, the twin-nostril W25 ram air hood, the black stripes, and the dual trumpets in the rear bumper, this 1972 Olds has every visual trick Oldsmobile used to get buyers into the showrooms. And they all work quite well to make one of the most eyeball-grabbing pieces of muscle weve ever offered. The work is extremely well done by someone who knew Oldsmobiles inside and out so it looks the way the factory might have built it back in 72. Admittedly, its not subtle so dont expect to keep a low profile, but if its attention you crave, this car will do it better than most. The paint and bodywork are quite good and the paint has a great shine and other goodies include those awesome six-pack taillights, a bright mesh grille up front, and hood pins to give it a dominating look in the other guys rear-view mirror. An equally large sum of money was lavished on the interior of this Olds and gives the black buckets an almost-new look, custom finished with red 442 stitching on the front buckets and W-30 on the rear bench. Its quite correct and a nice contrast to the arrest-me-red bodywork, but theres no question youre sitting inside a performance car. The optional Rally Pack gauges include an aftermarket tachometer in addition to the standard stainless-faced dials, all set into a handsome woodgrained dashboard and assisted by a set of auxiliary gauges integrated into the middle console. A 3-spoke wood-rimmed steering wheel looks properly sporty and a Hurst shifter manages the TH400 3-speed automatic transmission, the only automatic gearbox stout enough to handle Oldsmobiles biggest big block. The Sony AM/FM/cassette radio is powers speakers throughout the interior, if you dare try to drown out the rhythm of the big block rumble from under the hood. Out back the trunk is outfitted with a carpeted mat as well as a custom cover for the full-sized spare. The reason you build a 442 W-30 tribute like this is horsepower, and lots of it. The 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile V8 packs a tremendous punch and runs incredibly well, all thanks to a 4-barrel carburetor on a stock-style intake, and aftermarket headers, just in case you were feeling light on torque. Those satin black fenders make for a clean presentation and its dressed up with chrome valve covers and an original open-element air cleaner. A big aluminum radiator keeps the big block cool and the dual exhaust with twin Flowmaster mufflers ends in stainless trumpets under the rear bumper. Front and rear sway bars, power brakes, and power steering mean that this Olds is built for fun, not static display. Color-coordinated Super Stock II wheels always look best on an Oldsmobile and wear 235/60/14 BFGoodrich white-letter radials all around.
