From around 1956 until the mid 1980s, Dodge, Plymouth and even Chrysler squads were the most ubiquitous police cars in North America. In fact, the biggest department, the NYPD, used Plymouth and Dodge squads almost exclusively until the rear-drive M body car was finally axed in 1989.

Classic Car Overview

Everyone says they want a Chevelle, but the cars we have the most difficulty keeping in stock are Cutlass convertibles like this extremely nice 1972 Cutlass 442 Tribute ragtop. Dressed in classic springtime colors and offering the near-perfect blend of performance and luxury, its no surprise that these are gaining traction as some of the best collector cars to own. While all the A-bodies shared some underpinnings, somehow the Olds got the most dramatic sheetmetal, with that seductive kick-up behind the doors and a sweeping front end. Finishing it in bright orange certainly helps emphasize the cars finer points and the bright color definitely suits the sporty ragtop. The work was finished a few years ago and shows some signs of use, but still looks great today, making this the kind of car that stands out without making a spectacle of itself. Instead, onlookers will surely appreciate the deep shine, the crisp white 442 hood stripes, and the aggressive muscle-car presence that Oldsmobile strived for. Twin grilles up front have an intricate egg crate pattern, a theme that is echoed in the taillight lenses, and all the correct 442 and 455 badges have been installed where they belong, so it looks just about the way GM intended. Fore and aft are 442 bumpers, with dual trumpet exhaust tips poking out of the rear to complete the killer look. If youre going to have a car thats spending a lot of time in the sun, a white interior is a must. Bright seat covers adorn the front and rear benches, along with matching door panels that are in excellent shape. However, to prevent it from being too bright inside with the top up, there are black carpets on the floor, and a black dash and door panels with woodgrained inserts. A Hurst shifter is centered between the front buckets and almost taunts the driver to be aggressive through the gears. The gauges should look familiar to anyone whos driven a car from the Rocket division in the 60s and 70s, and the brushed stainless bezels for all the controls are a sharp styling touch. You could also get a whole host of luxury options in your Olds, including factory A/C, and an AM/FM stereo radio, factory upgrades that are going to get a lot of attention. The white power convertible top is a very clean and correct replacement featuring a glass rear window and folds neatly into the well. The trunk is stock and shows off just how solid this Cutty really is. The reason you build a 442 tribute like this is horsepower, and lots of it. The 455 cubic inch Oldsmobile V8 packs a tremendous punch thanks to great maintenance by conscientious ownership, and a legendary pedigree. Those blue valve covers and matching block make for a dramatic presentation and its dressed up with lots of chrome for impact. An HEI system upgrades the ignition system and the twin mufflers end in stainless trumpets under the rear bumper. Front and rear sway bars, power front disc brakes and power steering show that this Olds is built for fun, not static display. Factor in the quick-shifting 4-speed manual transmission, and youd be hard-pressed to find a better time with the top down. Color-coordinated Super Stock II wheels always look best on an Oldsmobile and wear white-letter Cooper Cobra radials all around. This 72 Olds 442 Tribute offers a lot of fun in the sun, great big block V8 performance, and a look that will get attention everywhere it goes, all for the fraction of the price of a real 442.
