Classic Car Overview

Car model is a 1972 Morgan Plus 8 SuperSports, Lightweight

It has been over fifty years since we acquired our first Morgan and, during that half century, have owned several hundred. Including two genuine Plus 4 SuperSports, the last original Trike ever built, aluminum bodied 1600 Competitions, four seaters, Dropheads, late 1904s 4/4s, and more 4/4s and Plus 4 than I can ever remember.

But the Morgan we are now offering is WAY beyond ANY of those of the past. As the story goes, due to a rules change for racing at the 24 Hours of LeMans, Morgan could field a Plus 8 as a production car. With all the bells and whistles. So, to prepare for this event, nineteen were built, Three of which were left hand drive. And according to what I have researched, one came to the USA.

Our car: titled as a 1972 but clearly that year was 'created' to get this car into the USA by a wealthy Bostonian enthusiast. Strengthened chassis with extra frame rails, tube shocks all around, the wider low body and all in aluminum (body AND fenders), negative camber front subframe, four piston high performance disc calipers, strengthened wire wheel hubs (at a time when ALL Plus 8s were fitted with alloy wheels, twin fillers so it could be refueled from either side in a pit stop, new chrome 72 spoke wire wheels, AND a recently rebuilt 4.6 liter all aluminum Rover SD1 V8.....big valve heads, high lift camshaft, balanced, Weber-Marelli four barrel carb on Edlebrock intake manifold, headers, and with 325 horsepower on he dyno. ........a car weighing around 1700 pounds (do the math) And with a 5 speed transmission and limited slip differential.

To suggest it is a very fast car, consider this....take the average road Porsche weighing, say, 3,500 or more pounds. And imagine a 650hp engine. ONE FAST car. In any gear. With sufficient torque to make starting from a dead stop, in 3rd gear, to be effortless.

WHAT ELSE? Recently repainted in deep BRG base coat/clear cost synthetic. And hand wet sanded and buffed. Leather adjustable and reclining seats, new stayfast cloth tonneau, excellent top and side curtains, new burl wood dashboard, fresh air heater, digital stereo/CD, on board fire suppression system, 170 mph speedo, alloy radiator with thermostatically controlled electric cooling fan, twin Brooklands racing screens, folding windshield, racing battery switch, H4 halogen headlights, driving lights, air horns, and of course a leather bonnet strap.

While the car has all of the specs of the SuperSports Lightwieght, it may or may not be one of the fabled nineteen. Could be a very special Morgan created by the factory for a wealthy American. Dunno. And having owned this car (after being purchased from the original owner) for a number of years, it has been an incredible experience FAR better ride than any Morgan I have ever driven, incredibly refined (my repeated comment has been 'a Morgan built at the Mercedes factory'), comfortable, and has been faultlessly reliable. While the owner's manual reads 'oil pressure should be 30-40 psi, this car runs at 50psi. Never any smoke, quiet valves, perfect synchromesh, light precise steering, to be candid, way beyond what I, and a world of Morgan owners, have experienced.

On the highway, fun to idle along at 60-70 mph and without even downshifting, put one's foot down and rapidly see 130-140 mph and beyond. It is an incredibly fast car.

So, there it is. Photos to be posted soon (and the posted year is courtesy of the title but quickly looking at the car, it is clearly 'something else.')
