The First Generation Monte Carlo debuted in 1970. The Monte Carlo started as Chevrolets version of Pontiac Grand Prix. This 1972 example is the final year of the First generation Monte Carlos. In 1972 the line saw a drop of the "SS" designation with an addition of a "custom" package offered for one year only. This package included a special suspension and other items previously included with the SS package. The most significant update to the Monte Carlo was variable-ratio power steering, which became standard for the first time. Finally, the interior remained relatively unchanged from the previous year, other than the availability of all-vinyl upholstery with the standard bench seat in addition to the optional Strato bucket seats.
